How Are Your Lessons Going? Thread 3

"old-time computer"

Le sigh. Now I know I'm officially old -- in my mindset, there's no such thing. All computers are newfangled.
Besides, the old computers didn't even have that hourglass thingy.

Just the blinking cursor, waiting for me to compose a term paper that would (later) inevitably not print on the shared dot matrix computer in the computer lab. And I would bring my floppy disc where I thought I had saved my paper to the computer lab helper guy, who would try to help, but would either not be able to find my paper, or find it but not be able to get it to print, either. Fun times.

my teachers have a similar feeling watching me process corrections
Pro often uses the analogy of searching through a file directory looking for the right folders and subfolders to find the documents where the info I’m looking for is stored.

I think I’ve finally convinced him that my brain is more like a metal filing cabinet, with drawers crowded full of papers that were inaccurately transcribed and then mis-filed.

I like it!

My brain is definitely not a filling cabinet of any stripe. When I'm processing, it feels more like I'm adding a widget to a giant Rube Goldberg machine...

Over the last few weeks we have begun weaving (see what I did there, momentarily) silver Standard into the routines. I'm excited for this new chapter and the next set of learning. There's some cool stuff, and I'm trying to remind myself that this is going to take time and repetition. Mucho of it. I also had sort of a light bulb where I realized it's probably best to keep the focus here until the next comp, where the other two styles will be a little plateaued because unless I make a hard swerve from 2 lessons/week to like 20, there is capacity for only so much progress.

This is random and delayed so I'm not feeling it as much, but two sessions ago I arrived to find out the A/C was not working, surprise! Temps were like 80-85 outside, and fans were blowing (there are no windows in the actual studio space, and I'm not even sure if the ones in the back area open or not). It was definitely warmer and I would have worn a sports bra if I had known. I will say that at that moment I was very displeased about it, as it was clear they were not telling people in advance (I saw the look on the face of the student after me). Apparently it had just gone out a few hours before my lesson.

Then, a couple days before the following lesson, I saw a social media post about "fun party even with no A/C". I texted my pro the next day (but still in time for that 24 hour cancellation policy) and asked if the A/C was fixed. "They are coming at X:00, should be fixed by your lesson!" The HVAC truck was just leaving when I pulled into the parking lot, and thankfully the A/C actually was working when I got inside.

Then for reasons I don't understand but tend to eyebrow raise at, for a different party (but same studio) this weekend someone made a point to call out how nice the A/C was (it felt oddly forced, like a subtle message to anyone who had complained). Errrr... OK, congratulations.

I've skipped parties when I thought the temperature and humidity would be unpleasant.

Just returned from another trip for lessons. A little back story...
I teach kids ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, musical theatre, etc. One of the important things for me to pass to them is the ability to find the magic in dance, using it to "get away" from life's stresses and dive in, feeling music inside the body, expressing through movement, etc. A little over a year ago, when I stopped feeling that magic I knew it was time to leave my former teacher as the idea of quitting dancing just was not me, and I had had that thought.
That magic is back! And it's not just in front of an audience, which is usually where I find it. It is in my lessons too! When the music hits just right and we are in tune with each other and he stretches a bit longer than usual because the music did and I follow. I am feeling expressions naturally happen. I am adding gestures that weren't choreographed. And it is amazing! I love it!
I'm so happy I am where I am and I chose the teacher that I did! I can't wait to get back on the competition floor in less than 2 weeks!

Also had a very very good lesson this weekend. We’re really trying to make my smooth not so flat looking and finally fix my shaping - the word of the day was “internal rotation”.

There was a diagram drawn that somehow finally made it clear to me that the head opposes the rib rotation and my dancing was like 5% better just from that. Dancing the first line of my foxtrot genuinely felt effortless.

I only have one more lesson before Capital due to travel, but if I even somewhat implement some stuff from this weekend I’ll be really happy.

Lessons are hard. My motivation is flagging. Because of [life], I only had 3 lessons during the whole month of July. We're struggling to get back into some type of rhythm (pun intended) where we plan what to work on and stick with the plan...it feels like lately we just sort of stand around and ask each other, "so...what should we do at today's lesson?" but then do something different as soon as I get distracted or bored or frustrated.

Shrug. This is a hobby.

I hope wherever you went had some other attractions beside the compost toilets ... Now I'm curious!
It was the Pacific Northwest, first in an airbnb that was a converted bus. So I slept in a bus.
Then after that in the forest camp grounds where I got a cabin.

I have to say, it was a reminder to work on my achilles mobility, cos you never know when you need to deep squat in the woods hahahaha!

I didn't know what compost toilets were before this trip.
