How in the world!

When I first started dancing Salsa I'd always wondered how in the world I would know when a lady was done doing her shines during a "T-Stance" (lead creating a base with arms out in front to girls waist level for the girl to shine)... It was a worry always to come out when she was finished and on time, I must have messed it up a billion times... I was always at an awe when people came out of that on time and harmoniously...

Yet, today I sit here and... God, when in the world did I figure-out that she was done even if I've never seen the particular shine... I'm perplexed that some things just dawn onto one-self yet never realize when it happens... :? I can't even say when it happened all I know is that it did..

I am glad I'm not the only one who has screwed that up. So how do you know when she is done? If I don't guess I wait for her to drop my hands down when she is done.

Almost a year ago, as a complete novice to salsa, I joined the DF so I could ask a tormenting question of how one can learn to follow. And I got lot’s of supportive hints and advices but ultimately most people wrote that I’ll figure it out with practice and time and I did !!! I don’t know when exactly it happened and how but it did ...

To be honest with you, I feel it, I don't even have to be looking at her to know it... and if she isn't... ooops... lol When I'm really on, meaning in tune to their emotions I can feel the change from "creative" during the shines to, "lets go baby I'm through" after they are done.

Physically speaking, it seems that when they are done they come at you different, I feel them coming off the 6,7 or 1,2 with a lot more intent to walk past you, also here in NY we have a bunch of very creative dancers, so much so that they all seem to finish this particular stance with a Mambo-Jazz... I'm actually sick of that move!

Forgive my ignorance but what is a mambo-jazz. Thanks for the rest. I guess it will just have to happen for me as well.

the mambo jazz (on2)

kick your right foot foward on the 4 or 8, as it is coming down on the 1 or 5/ middle position, your body has slightly tarted turning a quater to the right, when the 1 or 5 hit your body will be almost facing a quater to the right from starting position, your right foot will be facing foward, and your left leg will have began to kick in the same direction your left shoulder is pointing (to the side/left). so when the 6 arrives you will have hit it with your left foot, and you'll be completely facing the quater way to the right you started as the foot was coming down from the 4 or 8. Both feet should point in the same direction (forward but the left foot will use the toes to tap and the weight will be on your right)

hope that creates somewhat of a picture.

I've been taught by two different (female) teachers how to signal you've finished your shines in T-stance. Basically it's a sharp step back on the 1 with the shoulders/body twisted to the right and a snap of the head away from the leader, breaking eye contact. Most leaders seem to know this signal and duly go into a cross-body when I do this. This is on1 LA style, by the way.

 When I dance with guys they realease me to let me do my stuff (or is it so they can do theirs?) but they are rarely holding onto me in a "T-stance". It would be impossible if you knew the shines I did! (For some simple shines and where the guy stands with his legs apart and the girl does
swivels & goes down on one leg with the other between his legs a T-stance is necessary) Anyhow, when they are ready to take position again, all they do is take hold of my hands/arms and it all falls into place. I have never had any problem with timing in this situation.

:) I do as MacMoto... I signal this desire of mine to the lead by either going down in between his spread legs and rising up... or by the snap MacMoto mentioned... most leads seem to get the hint... :)
If we are apart (we don't use the T-stance) then I usually do the snap I mentioned and if the lead hasn't finished his own shines I do shimmies or cucaracha ... until he does a CBL :)

Me too, Mac. Sharpening that step with on1 usually does the trick for me as well.
