I am 43 and want to learn tango. What was your background prior to starting. Did you have a fulltime job when you started?
Two years before the end of my relationship and the divorce, I discovered my love for tango. It started very small, just looking at wallpapers and the covers of tango CDs. Everything seemed exotic and unattainable to me. In order not to endanger my relationship, I didn't start dancing, but secretly listened intensively to tango, especially to Piazzolla. But it didn't help. When the relationship finally broke, I was 45, I signed up for a dance studio. I learned tango like crazy. The other participants found me manic, crazy and arrogant. But I wanted to take advantage of the new opportunity in my life. Of course I had a full-time job. But the new beginning released uncanny powers. I was on the pista dancing tango nine days a week. Tango is an addiction that requires strength and energy, but also gives you back in return a new life and a new identity. Tango became my new family. I travel a lot and I find connections in every city. The tango community is mainly networked on FB. AND yes, they are mainly singles, people who have been disappointed or are afraid of commitment. But I have now a worldwide circle of friends and of course unrestricted access to the opposite sex....What was your background prior to starting. Did you have a fulltime job when you started?
It is PadaWAN, says I, mmm yesAnd how will you proceed? There are areas that represent a tango desert and cities where there is an oversupply and a lot of food envy. It is important that there is a small, friendly community around your future teacher. It is just as important that you learn to assess the skills and quality of your teacher, i.e. that you have comparison. And don't let anyone tell you that you have to attend courses and classes first before you go to tango parties.
And of course you have to invest. I don't mean money first. You need perseverance and a vision. In the first 7 months euphoria will carry you. But then you become increasingly aware of your weaknesses and start to quarrel and fight. Tango has no syllabus and no curriculum (even if teachers see it differently). It is an open-ended art: comparison with better dancers will always eat away your self-confidence. A tango padavan has to overcome many hurdles, secure balance and a good equilibrium organ, security in the musical time signatures and musical styles. And a high level of communication is helpful. Your frustration tolerance must be high, as well as your ability to use criticism constructively. You will go through a tough school that will change your personality.
I am in Long Island, just outside NYC, and that would be considered reasonable. Is there a discount if you buy a package of lessons? We save $5/lesson on a package of 5 lessons, and save $10/lesson on a 10 lesson package. Lessons are 45 minutes at the Studio.Long time no hear but now I have found a studio but lessons are $125 for 40 minutes of private lesson, it seems expensive. Is this normal?
Try to find beginning teachers or new teacher couples. They have to establish themselves first and are therefore cheaper and usually more attentive. To find them you have to wander around in the scenes and ask questions....found a studio but lessons are $125 for 40 minutes of private lesson, it seems expensive..
