How Many Hours

Hey dancers,

How many hours do you normally sleep? I need about eight and a half in average. I used to sleep a lot less and led a lot less active life before I became a dancer. It seems that my partner does not need as much sleep as I do and does Ok. I wonder how other dancers do when it comes to sleep.

From what i get, age and sleep requirement goes together.
I also average 8,5 hours, sometimes more over a weekend. I know, it is bad to change your sleep routine. I am in my 30's.

actually i've noticed that my sleep requirements have changed drastically in the past 8 months or so, especially since winter hit. i have been getting by on like 5-6 hours for a long time, and several times a week even less. it used to be nothing for me to get 4.5 hours.

but now that little sleep is kicking my knat. i am dancing fewer days a week but more intensely when i do, and working out more.

I need 8 hours a night and often only get 7. I find the more physically active I am (ie. the more I dance) the better I sleep. Two weeks ago around Christmas I didn't dance at all for a week because of travel and practice space being closed and had instant insomnia (my partner had the same experience). Now that we're back to dancing I can sleep again. Well, except for our cat who found an empty film canister and decided it made a really fun and loud toy at 2 a.m. last night.

I need eight...I am 40...I got three last night and feel tired but am too keyed up to take a nap....I will be incoherant by 7pm......but I have always needed alot of sleep:confused:

My length of sleep depends on a lot. Work schedule usually limits sleep to 6 hours. If I go out dancing after work, I get about 4. I feel just as rested after 6 hours as I do after dancing and getting 4. The dancing relaxes me so I believe that I sleep better.

The other things that make a difference is how well I have eaten during the day. What level of depression I am at. And how long I have gone with a lack of sleep. During "opera" season, I get 4-6 hours every night and then sleep almost all day on Monday, waking up in time to go to my dance lessons.

Yes, opera. Have you heard it. It is where people stand down stage and make some really horrible noises. Then the audience claps and someone else makes some more noises. Then after it goes on for way way to long, we get to go home only to come back and do it again tomorrow.

Can you tell I hate opera? I much prefer the ballet season, which we are in now.

...re-railing the topic. I get between four and six hours of sleep a night. That number creeps up to about eight to ten hours on weekends. I have no problem getting by on four hours or less as long as I keep going. As soon as I stop or slow down, I'm in trouble.

I need my eight. I can get by on less for a few days, but my general alertness and mental processes start to slip after 2-3 days of that.

One odd thing I first noticed in college: If I absolutely most go on short sleep for some reason, it's better that I sleep for 4 hours max. I can operate pretty well for a day on that. On the other hand, if I sleep 5-6 hours, I'm going to be dragging the next day and all the caffeine in the world doesn't help. I suppose it's got to do with the cycle of REM/non-REM sleep, but I've never really seen any good explanation.

More the better. 7.5-8 is ideal, but then we don't live in an ideal world. Exercising does give me better sleep as others have mentioned.
