Still not dancing social salsa as much as I'd like, but our local arts council co-hosted a live band along with a local latin dance company last weekend.
I had a blast! I relived the good old days of my youth dancing social salsa with fun leg catches, fancy arm styling, body rolls, shimmies, and shines. I had a great workout following new dancers, seasoned dancers, and all types of dancers in-between. An unexpected highlight was meeting a young intermediate lead who showed real promise and passion for learning latin dance. Our dance chemistry was great. There were a couple of occasions when we missed our hand connections, and the panic on his face was real. I just smiled and gave him a reassuring look, and reached out and connected at the next opportunity I saw. He apologized and thanked me for being a good dance partner to work with. I was humbled and honored by his words. (This was a mirror moment for me. I think I get a similar look of panic when I lose connection with my leads in ballroom.)
Another unexpected highlight was getting the chance to lead some of my ballroom friends who decided to try social salsa and cha-cha. They seemed surprised at the how much momentum and the varied different directions they could be led into versus the way they were taught.
Admittedly, my cha-cha looked more like my ballroom cha-cha vs my old street style, and the cumbia they danced was a bit different from the cumbia I learned dancing with friends and visiting Mexico but I was still able to follow.
Overall, it was reaffirming to get back to my first dance love and get to dance with abandon again. I was young again - until 10 o'clock. Then, it was bed time. (laughs)
