how much head shape for lady in promenade?

Yes, please do. As instructed by my teacher, I am currently aiming for more upright. But I would love to hear what people have to say.

Do you suppose some figures are a little more about showing the couple looking in a direction? While others are more about transition through a position? For example, could the plan be different for link to close promenade versus an open impetus and promenade feather?

well, these are the sorts of practices I would like to hear about from folks who have a deliberate practice...I mean, I know there is less of a curve in promenade, I know that I have to look past my wrist...any further rotation and I will undoubtedly begin to see poor alignment below that...I am just curious as to how others think about it

I've been told by my coach to just have my head position as a continuation of my spine and body position...so nothing extreme, nothing strange, just extending the line as much as I can.

yep...just that sometimes that continuation is more curved than others...I am just interested in the nuances of that not only in promenade where it seems to mostly be less...but also about those changes in general

I think if you have too much of a curve in promenade, it looks a bit too extreme. I prefer an upright but stretched look.

I tend to keep my head more upright, however that may be from inexperience and ignorance of better placement more than anything. I actually have a question about promenade though, is there ever an occasion in which one would switch to promenade without changing your head from closed position? We have a dancer who is gold in Standard and was helping out my partner and I, and in one of our routines she instructed me not to switch my head coming out of the open impetus because I'm switching right back into closed position in the next move. However, she only took up Standard this year, but has never actually taken any lessons in Standard and all she knows she learned from her partner who loves Standard, so I'm not completely confident in that advice-- I had always heard that you should always switch the head when going into promenade. Could anybody either confirm or shoot down this advice?

What is the next figure?

And you are right to be cautious in taking advice from someone who is not very experienced, unless they can give sound technical reasons beyond "so-and-so told me to do this".

For me, the shaping of the head in promenade position depends on the figure and what the rest of my body is doing.

Do you mean that you wouldn't move your head at all (ie that you would still be looking left?) that seems odd to me, but I'm also not an expert!

This is currently one of the major issues I'm working on in my dancing, so thanks for posting on it!
Previously I'd been told to shift the support of my head from my left back to my right back. I think I must have taken that advice too far though, because I've been more recently told to just leave my head in the same position, but rotate the direction I'm looking at. I think (although, I'm really still struggling with this) that the extension of the neck then ends up roughly the same as in closed position.

That is what she was telling me to do, which, like I said, also seemed odd to me. But in the end she is the one placing in Gold at Harvard, so she's much better at Standard than I am. I thought someone with more expertise might be able to give me some more insight.

Weave.

And it's not like she's totally clueless, she did place in Gold Standard at Harvard this semester, however she even admits she hasn't taken lessons in Standard so she doesn't necessarily understand all the technique behind even what she dances.
