How tall are Blackpool Champions?

A friend and I have been arguing about the height of Blackpool and World Champions in Standard... He claims that William Pino is no taller than 5'6. Can someone please clarify how tall he is? What is the average height of leaders at Blackpool? How tall is Jonathan Wilkins? Thanks a lot!

I'm almost certain that your friend is correct about William's height. Judging from a photograph I have here of the lineup from the International Championships last October, he looks to be around about the same height as Katusha. I think most of the other finalists (Jonathan Wilkins, Timothy Howson, Mirko Gozzoli) are around 6'0 / 6'1 ish. William is definitely considerably smaller.

I used to dance Pro/Am with Wilkins a long time ago (yes, he did Pro/Am at one time), and he's 5'11".

I'm always surprised by how much shorter pros or top amateurs seem off the floor than when they're dancing...on the floor, they all look well over 6'! (ok, except for Pino).

That's really cool Laura, I'm jealous! You must have learned a lot.

Cris Hawkins and Mirko Gozoli are also very close to 5'11 and 6..
stood next to them...
I would also guess these guys all weigh about 155 lbs..
Also I saw

Jonathan Crossley must be about 5'9" or 5'10". He's pretty tiny build-wise as well. Lyn has wider shoulders than he does. Chris Hawkins seemed about 5'11" to me in our lesson as he was slightly taller than me in heels and I am about 5'10.5" in heels. Giampiero looks about 6'1" to me.

Yes. And no. The Yes part is that because he was my first teacher, my picture of the basic ideas of Standard dancing has always been clear to me. Despite 9 years of dancing under various teachers and coaches, no one has ever contradicted another so badly that I got angst-ridden about it. In fact, I can't even think of any true contradictions, just different ways of expressing or getting to the same thing. I think the 1+ year I spent learning newbie bronze from Jonathan gave me more of a framework for understanding Standard than I ever realized until recently.

The No part is that after I took from him for about 1 1/2 years, I moved cross-country and quit dancing for 3 1/2 years. When I started over, I had to start from scratch again. A lot of stuff was mentally familliar when I started over, but the muscle memory was practically gone by that point.

I was so embarassed the first time I danced when he was judging, because it had been so long since I'd seen him...he was very nice and said "hi" afterwards (and tactfully said nothing about the dancing). Maybe one of these days I'll dance again when he judging. The creme de la creme of prizes in that case would be for him to say "nice job" or "well done" afterwards. Well, we'll see -- no telling what life will bring.

I think Chris is more like 5'9" - he and Hazel were closer than usual in height, wheras she was about exactly the same height as my partner of the time we had lessons with her.

What do you mean?

Ok, good...I'm thinking I would now qualify to be a Blackpool champion based on height. Now, what else am I going to need? :)
