Interesting thread in terms of energy level. I find I am tentative whenever my brain has to be thinking too much about what I am doing. There's a "blip" when I am thinking too much, and then there is a "blip" when I first try not to think about whatever step I am doing. However, the more I practice the more I am finding myself able to make the leap past that "second blip."
I've been dancing between 10 and 15 hours a week recently. Going to practice parties helps a great deal. I'm also having to make peace with the fact that some styles I want to do and particularly enjoy (ie swing) simply have a steeper learning curve for me than others because of the more foreign (to me) combinations of movement.
I've also been making myself watch how I am moving in the mirror, which while somewhat unpleasant, does help me be less tentative.
