How to Do Dry Hair?

Hi,

About a week ago, we had to do some showcase. For this occasion, I did not want to go through the hassle of washing my hair and then washing again couple hours later because I did not have enough time. So I decided to put tons of hair gel on my dry hair and do the bun. I had seen other ladies doing their dry hair at comps just before going to the floor, so I did not expect to run into any problem. Also the gel I used said on the label I could apply it on my dry hair. What a disaster! I could not put my hair into a bun. I ended up having my hair down. Fortunately we did a Latin, so my hair did not look totally out of place.

Still I would like to know how other ladies make a nice bun with their dry hair. Normally I wash my hair and put hair gel when it is still damp and then put into a bun. I time everything else around my hair to prevent my hair from getting dry before I do it, which is not always easy. It will be nice if I can do my hair at comps especially when we have to drive long distance. So please let me know if you know any trick to do dry hair.

BTW I have lots of long thick hair. I wonder if that has anything to do with the disaster last week.

I always do my hair dry. Just make a ponytail. put all the hair into a fine hair net, shape it into a bun, pin it and spray... shouldn't take more than 5 min for a simple bun...

I never gel it when it is dry but if you ar going to...it helps to condition the sh*t out of it first so that your hair is already very slick

I can put my dry hair into a bun only if I have several hair nets to hold it down and to tame all the fly-away hairs. I don't use gel on dry hair - you get an ucky-sticky mess! I just spray it liberally with hair spray after the bun is in place.

I usually do my hair by a sink. I always start with dry hair, wet it a bit from the faucet, then put gel in it. My trick is to use a hair dryer to help the drying process, and generously use hair spray as well... Have never started with wet hair....

I've always done my bun with my hair dry.
When I had extremely long hair, I'd usually put it in a ponytail first, and then comb lots of gel in - while the gel was still wet, I'd braid the ponytail, and then pin that up into the bun with a hair net, and lots more gel, and bobbypins. I never had a problem with it, although because of the gel and hairspray required to keep my hair in place, it took a few applications of shampoo when I showered after to get my hair to feel clean.

With dry hair, I find that spray gel often works better than the stuff in a tube (at least for my fine, straight hair).

I pull my hair back to where I'm going to put the bun, and hold it with one hand while I spray gel with the other all over my head. Then I comb the hair towards the ponytail, to get it to lie smooth. I put on the ponytail holder, twist the bun into place, and add a couple of pins so it won't fly completely apart. Then I put a hairnet over the bun, twisting it to cover the bun 3-4 times. Finally, I shape it with my hands and put pins everywhere. I finish with a layer of hairspray all over my head.

Ditto...and I have long, (below the shoulder blades) thick, heavy hair.

With very thick hair (which I have, thick and wavy), it's best to put loads of gel on wet hair. This is the only way for me to keep it in place. I have never managed to get it look nice with gel on dry hair. Except for once, I got it done at the hairdresser. He dried (straightened) my hair first and then put gel and LOADS of pins to keep it up in a bun. And I wasn't competing or anything, just went to a wedding and I don't think I moved much either. I can never get my hair in a bun without the hairdresser's help.

You ladies with light and staight hair make it sound to easy to put your hair in a bun  .

Ok, it seems that I may be able to do my hair dry. But I have short bang on my forehead and I don't think it will be easy to pull back sleek. Any suggestion?

you can pull them back, and hold then back while you apply spray and then blow dry back. If you have a strong enough stray, they will stay back.

Okay, here's an old tip. Dry hair is much more manageable if it is not freshly washed. Give it a day or two. Also, make sure you don't use too much conditioner, or one that is too heavy. Consider not using any when washing, then using a leave-in cream or spray conditioner on the ends only.

If I have freshly washed hair and want to put it up, I spray with Elnett hairspray then brush it out, this makes it just "dirty" enough to stay up well. Otherwise it's just too soft and silky, and that means it doesn't have any friction and won't hold up.

oooohhhhh! Elnett! That's banned here in the US but is supposed to be the best. Although, it's banned here because of the damage it does to the ozone.
