How to spot in Pivots ?

My BIG problem I think.

Can't seem to turn fast without spotting. I tried to do pivots with my head straight ahead and spot, seems pretty easy.

I used to be a jazz/ballet/contemporary type of dancers (not all at the same point in time) so it is really hard for me to turn without spotting !

The moment I assume the standard position I just spin out of orbit.

I thought at first it was my posture but I really think it is actually the spotting.

I am going to go to my first lesson with this great female pro this weekend (well I hope she is great) so this will be one of the questions I need to ask her.

Thanks for your suggestion to take lesson from a female/follow. I will let you know how it goes !

Are you refering to Ballroom Pivots? I dont spot in those as my head is to the left. I might be wrong in that. I am sure others, wiser than me will have an opinion :-)

How many do you do in a row. Unless you do VW....I have been taught in VW that you tilt your hips and step forward for two before crossing the feet. The man and the women allow each other to pass ie your turn mine turn. etc. but that is not pivoting.
If you keep yourself connected at the hip on the lower half and the top half of your body over and out to the left side with your head you should not get dizzy. I am the queeen of dizzy and I dont get dizzy in a pivot turn.. search you tube and see if you can get examples of a pivot turn.

Keep your head well back and away from your partner, so that it is on the outside of the rotation, rather than in the center. A smooth rotation will then simply extend the head shape, and should not cause you to get dizzy.

I tried to think as a forward and backward instead of a spin but I still get dizzy.....

Do you extend your body more when you are doing these ?

I am talking about Waltz pivots not VW. Funnily I never lost my balance from the first time I learned VW.

do the steps slowly...keep yourself in closed frame position, your head gazing over your own wrist...forward step, then pivot, backward step, then pivot, if you do then slowly and don't pivot until the last moment you should be less dizzy...obviously you don't want to do jillions in a row...if you are still dizzy...dont practice them that way...do the forward action a bundh of times and then the backward action a bunch of times

Thanks fasc, can I PM you about something ?

I am just very upset atm.

This is not related to this issue btw just another teacher issue.

You sounds very wise and I just need to vent otherwise I may go crazy !
