okay...so I am in my lesson and the instructor tells me I am a good dancer...and I get that wince on my face b/c good dancer to me means something way beyond what I think I am...so how do you all define good?...are there critical defining hurdles? is it a matter of how much one progresses and at what pace? b/c when I was asked when (if ever) I would define myself as good, I couldn't come up with a rational answer...to me, national champions come to mind...how good is good after a year of dancing? or two or five? just interested in folk's thoughts...and is there a way to gage it?

I'll take it....he isn't the complimenting type ...still I am less interested in speculation on what he meant and more interested in what others think about it in general

I'll tell you in a couple of weeks. ;)

what are you talking about! National champions suck too! (just kidding)

I think you are a good dancer when you feel you have some control over what you are doing and you are doing what you want. And your body is cooperative with you doing what you want it to do in order to express yourself.

there are some people out there with a lot of technical and physical ability that are rehearsed... but they don't dance, they are just doing what the coach told them to do in the last lesson. Excersizes in dance technique. With a partner, in costume, on the competion floor.
They are not good dancers... yet

and also there are people there with a spark that cannot express themselves cause there body is no cooperating with them yet. They are not good yet either. They need to learn some technique.

everything else doesn't matter all that much. You can be a good dancer at the prechamp or world pro finalist level. As long as you know what you are doing, you know what you want, and you are doing what you want.

maybe I'm just verbalizing my thoughts that have nothing to do with being a good or not so good dancer...

thanks kitty this IS what I am looking for...not some hard and fast answer, but the way in which other folks ponder it...and I really like your answer...and think perhaps it bodes well for me

Isn't reletive? I have thought about this samething also. I start to believe that I was decent once I started leaving the little pond that I lived. Once I ended up in a bigger pond and the bigger fish enjoyed my company. You no what, this is starting to read like a childrens book. But anyways, half of me never want to believe, for the fear that I'll stop pushing my self to be better. The other half doesn't care, it's to busy dancing.

being good

As the last post said " good " , is a relative term placed alongside a yardstick. The comparison could be in any given situation for e.g.-- dance studio " I am as good ( hate the term ) as most people here .Again , using that surounding as your yardstick, It begs the question, which , ironically, will give you your answer. Who do you consider as good ?-- after answering , that, is your current yardstick . Those values change with time.; and , remember; everything is relative; but most important of all is what satifies your needs .If you are a social dancer only, your priorities should be more on the lines of what makes me happy when i dance .The competitive world is far more about level of achievment in comparison with others , a trap many beginners fall into ( the comparison thing ). A very well known prof. I was coaching once asked me " How good do you think I can be ? "-- my reply-- as good as YOU want to be. He went on to be u.s. champion .

Never. I will never be good enough. I will be better than others, which says very little. My teacher says "You're very good". Ooooh, very absolute. I say "Yeah, compared to the old couples, the peeps that have no sense of rhythm and the ones that take one lesson every two weeks and thus can't progress." I know I'm good compared to them. That much I can admit. She proceeds to saying "No, you're very good compared to people at your level". I say "My level is something very difficult to define. Are we talking about the syllabus? Are we talking about the group classes? Are we talking about socials?" She gives up at some point.
