I can't be the only one... (shoe heel height related)

Ok so I have a question-type thing, about heel heights, and it's something where I feel like I'm the only one but... I can't be the only one right?
So for the longest time I danced in shoes (of various brands) with a 2.5" heel, and my ankles were always tired and/or sore, but I just thought "well duh, you've been dancing in heels, of course they're tired and sore and stiff." Then, on a whim, I decided to try a 3" heel, and my gosh, it's like I can hear Aladdin singing 'a whole new world' to me, the change in height makes my ankles feel sooooo much better, they're less stiff, they take a lot longer to get sore or tired, less swollen at the end of a long day... so many positives! But talking with other ladies it's always the opposite, their comfort comes from a lower heel. I have long, and somewhat narrow feet so maybe that contributes to where my comfort zone is. But I've found my comfort is 3 inches, (or flat jazz shoes) and getting the spiel left, right, and center about 'how comfortable and awesome practice shoes are' (the type with the low-ish chunky heel) I cant help but think they'd be insanely uncomfortable to my ankles, but with everyone else feeling the opposite as me, I don't have much of a basis for argument, not that I really have to, but it's the principle of the matter really... I can't be the only one right? Please someone out there tell me you're the same, that you need the extra height for the sake of your ankles!!!

I dance both styles in heels higher than most - standard in a 2.5, and latin in a 3 (and have been thinking about going to a 3.5). My preferred heel height for work shoes is 3-3.5 inches as well... but there's no pain when I'm in the 1.5-2 inch range, I just don't particularly like them.

For me it's not about my ankles, but how stable I feel. I just feel more balanced when I'm all of the way up on my demi-pointe (which, as I have long feet, is really high - and long toes, so it's stable). Even in a 3.5 inch shoe, I can clearly show footwork like toe leads with the heel of the ground. Not everyone can. There's a woman I know who, in a 2.5 inch heel, can't go any higher... so she dances latin in a 2.

From the way you describe how your feel and ankles react to the mid-range heel height, I'd be worried about an impingement/short tendons in the ankle or the foot. It's worth thinking about an assessment by a dance physiotherapist - you might be compensating for something in all sorts of weird ways, which could do some damage in the long run.

I received my new Latin sandals (that I’d ordered pre-pandemic)! I custom-ordered a pair with a “junior” heel, so that I can use them when I Lead as well as when I Follow and don’t have time to change my shoes at comps. I am simply not going to wear 2.5-inch skinny/flared heels when I Lead, so up until now, I’ve worn unisex practice shoes for comps when I both Lead and Follow and don’t have time to change shoes between heats. Latin is not my strong suit, and my feet have always looked a bit “heavy” in the unisex footwear, especially as a Follow. So, now I have an option to wear a lighter-looking shoe. Very pleased with them.
