I can't believe I said ...

A couple we know does AT in addition to ballroom. When an AT song comes on I'd rather just sit and watch them rather than get up and do an American-style tango, because they are so beautiful together. This weekend after watching them I mentioned to the guy how much I enjoyed it ... but then I said the video of a showcase that he had posted on YouTube was not representative of his dancing and they look much better in person. He agreed that he really prefers to just dance ...

In my defense, I would want to know when a video is not representative of the actual quality of my dance. Also, I know he truly does not like to perform, and does so only for small familiar groups as a concession to his wife and their teachers. When performing, he remembers the routine but he gets stiff and awkward and that affects how his wife dances too. But then again, he DID post the video on YouTube ...

Now I feel like I may have been rude ... I don't know whether to apologize, or just let it slide ...

Meh. You stated your observation without intended malice. And he basically agreed with you. Let it slide.

absolutely nothing to apologize for. You said very generous compliments to him. I would be super happy if someone told me I look better in person than video;)

^ Agree with above. I often second-guess my compliments. Probably because I'm so good at teasing my husband when he tries to compliment me and I turn it around, hehe! But I'd love to hear someone tell me my dancing was nice, and would love to hear it's nicer in person than on video. And for ATers, whose focus is dancing rather than performing, I'd think especially nice. He probably just posted so when people ask, "What do you do?" he can now say, "This here on youtube!" I think most of the time dancing is nicer in person though. There's a feeling in the air that you don't get on video.:)

Thanks, everyone. I feel better now.

Wooh, you're probably right about him posting for friends/family that haven't seen him dance in person. And the only thing "wrong" with the video is that the dancing is so mechanical ... he looks like a step-monster and his wife's embellishments look forced rather than spontaneous ... they're not the kind of performers who can make a choreography look natural ... it just seems so lifeless compared to the real thing ... I find it painful to watch, but I can see that others might find it interesting.
