Importance of Posture in Dance

Many years ago, I remember before learning my first step, our instructor lectured on the importance of correct posture in dance. Little did I realize, at that time, how important posture would be in my profession.

I am a Podiatric Biomechanical Engineer and Researcher. My area of interest is abnormal foot motion and its link to posture and overall health. In 2002, I published a paper describing an embryological foot type previously unrecognized by the medical care community. This foot type, which is very common (technical name Primus Metatarsus Supinatus), is linked to the development of poor posture in children. In adults it can lead to chronic musculoskeletal pain. If you happen to be a professional dancer and you have this foot type, it makes it very tiring to maintain a correct posture.
