Interested in learning Salsa

Hey guys, I've been learning all sorts of dances this year (I'm pretty new to dancing, but I practice all the time, and I LOVE it.)

Now I'm trying to learn the Salsa. I'm told its a really sexy dance. Now I can find all sorts of videos/classes/etc for salsa, but there are SO many types. So I'm trying to figure out if there is a type of salsa that people would recommend? Or if there is just a basic type, that's under a certain name?

Well Asmoridin, it is true there are a variety of salsa styles. What would be best for you is to see what sort of salsa is done where you are and the places that you go to. That is the best style to start learning as you will be able to go out to practice and enjoy yourself. After that you can look into exploring the other salsa styles.

I second Sagitta's suggestion. Go with what is danced in you area, then you can learn other styles when you know more about your local scene, or goals.

Well, that makes sense, but I tend to travel a good amount for now (as part of the education) and I really don't know where I'll be. I was wondering if there was one that is considered mainstream or something, something that I'd have the best chance finding people around the world to dance it.

Hiya Asmoridin, welcome to ther Forums!

The most popular timing, world wide, is dancing "on1." But this depends on where you go as well. Ultimately you will have to decide what style and timing is right for you and, as Boriken would say, speaks to your soul. As far as a starting place though, the two major genres danced worldwide at the moment seem to be LA and Cuban... I have my preferences, but they may not be yours.
