Interstudio comp coming up: Support meeee!

So this is it: my very first competition/performance/thingy that is watched and judged. It's July the 9th, Saturday. Am pretty frightened, but am also trying to be as cool as humanly possible.
Here's how it works. There are two dance categories, 4 dances each, and I have to choose one of them. First one is Waltz, Mambo, Tango and Samba and second one is Foxtrot, Rumba, Rock n' Roll and Cha cha. Terribly torn between the two, but probably will go with the second one, since it's Sobrero's preference as well and we have to choose the same category. However, I don't feel all that certain about my rock n' roll for one thing and am also fond of all the first category dances as well.
About the levels: it works like some big ballroom comps, as I see it. It's pro/am style, meaning we dance with our teachers, and we compete at different syllabus levels. Though the whole thing is just a friendly competition inside our studio franchise, it's still a big event. Every person is representing his/her school as a team, though I'm not exactly sure if we're going to be judged as a team or as couples.
Good thing is I'll be dancing with my teacher, so it will be considerably better. Bad thing is I might suck. It's a possibility. I don't know how good people my level can get around the different schools. And yes, I'm also nervous because my best friends will be there to see me, my mother as well, but it's really not bothering me that much. Good thing.
Usual stuff is bothering me. My rumba hip motion during my forward rocks, the dratted follow-through which haunts me during foxtrots, the speed I'm not used to at rock n' roll, my crossover hand technique in chacha. Probably just silly things that spring up during jitters, but still things.
Surprising thing is I've got my clothes figured out. :P
Erhm. So. I would appreciate some pointers. It's not that formal an event, more like semiformal compared to national comps. I mean, we don't even have to wear heels or skirts (we, of course, are beginners so it would be faily difficult for us to wear heels) so things like extravagant outfits and makeup are really not necessary. Tricks like "smile a lot" and so on might seen trivial but would be greatly appreciated. You're dealing with newbie material here.

Ahem....i'm a total newbie as well, so sorry i won't be able to give you any suggestions. I can only wish you BEST OF LUCK and I'm sure you will do well!!

:rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker:

My best advice is have fun -no matter how you dance you'll look better if you look like you are enjoying yourself and its easier to look like you are enjoying yourself if you really are - My second best advice is dance with your partner - don't dance at him - dance *with* him. This is something I have been workin on and it helps me - just remind yourself you are dancing with the pro - you got the good partner enjoy it!

The inter-studio comps I've done have been fun, pure and simple. They're not nearly as serious as "real" comps. Just lots of fun among good friends. And good competition practice, of course. I'm sure you know you always have all my love and support. You're going to knock em dead. 8)

*nailbite* Still, it's sorta making me nervous, Jenny. :?
I'm taking second category (chacha, rumba, foxtrot, rock n' roll). I'm juston my 3rd syllabus steps and it's a syllabus comp thingy, but our teacher signed us up for 5th step level because she said that there would be no challenge for us in 3rds. I coul dtake this as a compliment, but I'm just freaked out because all the other contenstants will know at least a full year's worth of technique and steps. :headwall:
Still. I trust my teacher.

Well...if your teacher signs you up for something beyond what you have done then the pressuer should be off as you'll just have to follow.

My advice is the same as Gumby's; try to just have fun and smile. I know, easier said than done, but I think if you really look like you're enjoying yourself, it always gives you a little edge on your competition. I bet you'll relax a little after the first dance. And when you're done, just look at it like a learning experience, no matter how it turns out.

I wish you the very best, my friend. Try to have some pictures taken! :D

Pictures: will try, Mac, though I'm not at all sure there will be a photographer. I think there will be.

Update! :D :D :D
Team Match is over. Twas great experience. Our team unfortunately ended last, but it really didn't matter because the other two members of the team were beginners and the level was just too high for them. Natural for our points to freefall.
However! We did get very good comments, even though we're just on the 3rd syllabus steps and our division was 5th steps. A couple of judges and teachers told our teacher they liked us (Sobrero and myself, that is) and that it was bad luck that we didn't do better (meaning, our team had beginners that pulled us behind).
I also got tons of great comments about the way I looked. Strange, what a pair of contacts, makeup, heels and a fiery red dress can do to a girl.  Many of my friends had trouble recognising me. :P
I'm pretty satisfied with my presence there. I think my dancing now has a more ballroomy touch from all that practicing, though I must say my salsa has gone to the dogs. :? Well, can't have it all.

Hey, you've done it -- the dreaded first competition ever is complete! It will be better next time, and the time after...it just keeps getting easier (up to a point, at least for me).

Indeed it's over, and I had a great time. I like comps! Comps are fun! Believe it or not, I liked the hard coaching and all, too.
Only I feel a bit burnt out after this, which makes my August break for holidays a good idea. I need a break. I thought I didn't, but even this small, silly thing has affected me a lot.
I'll be back on the dancefloors this September. :D
