Into the Dance Desert. . . . . .

Well folks my work is taking me to Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, for the next 3 months.

It seems to be a dance desert. . . no Salsa, no Swing, no Ceroc, no AT, very little Ballroom. . . .

I'm thinking of doing either Contemporary dance or Ballet - but I'm going to look pretty weird at my age and sex. . . .

Any ideas folks?

Here in the US, anywhere they don't have the more formalized dance venues they generally always have country/western dances. When the partner and I have to dance somewhere, and the studios don't have any parties, we choose a country dance hall. Country dances are everywhere over here, and we can always get in several swings, waltzes, foxtrots, etc.

Is there anything comparable in the UK?

No. . . .that was the hole Ceroc has filled. . . .partner dance in the UK was more or less wiped out in the 1980's, it's coming back in the major urban areas, but in the boondocks there is still nothing.

Wow. And I was whining about spending a week and half going to/from Oklahoma. 3 months -- I'd go mad. Good luck to you!

I hate to think what I would do if I am in that position, which could happen if my partner is posted to some remote place. Hope he find s a job in the city but what ever happens I am sure we will do our best to keep on dancing :-)

If your goal is to get some exercise, either jazz or ballet class is fine. But they're not that social. You said there's a little ballroom there. Why can't you do that?

Whereabouts in OK you going? I know OKC had an AM, and has another location that teaches ballroom/salsa/swing classes every day which friends are starting lessons at.

Tulsa. Have been going for years and never yet found a studio. Will try googling again, but the problem is: I drive into Tulsa Thurs afternoon late; get to work Fri morning around 7, leave work Fri night around 8, get to work Saturday around 7, leave around six, arrive Sunday around 7, leave around 4, drive back to NY. My only time available is Thursday aft and perhaps a social Sat night. Hah. In Tulsa? Again, I say, Hah!

Heh, yeah. Lived in OKC myself, but used to work in Tulsa. Sounds like it's time to pick up Country Western. ;)

might be worth calling some of places listed here:

Just did, that, thanks! And found a social on Saturday night -- go figure. It's a new studio, though, so that's probably why I never found it before.

Thanks agin.
