Yes, there are programs you can use to work with such document formats, i have several. I use Quickoffice Pro the most (also include Powerpoint format), and there is also GoDocs, and GoDocs Pro (which works with Google Drive/Google Docs).

None of these is free in their functional format. The first is around 20 bucks. IMO, it is worth it. I save all my PDFs to Quickoffice Pro, as well.

Why couldn't you just use Google Docs directly?

You can get gDocs for iPad, though, for Google Docs. I've got that as well...

I believe gDocs is only a reader, though -- no create or modify capability IIRC.
