Is there a danger of over training ?

Is there such thing as dancing too much ?

How much training is too much ? Over 20 hours a week ? Over 30 hours a week ?

We are currently doing about 15-20 hours week of training but as soon as we go over 20 hours our bodies literally start to break down.

We have knee problems, ankle problems, fatigue, etc.

What is an optimum training for each style in your opinion ?

Also how many days can one train in a row without taking a break ?

We found that anything over 7 days is an overkill and counter productive.

Will be good if we can have a day off every 3-4 days.

Yes there probably is such a thing as overtraining in dance, but no one can tell you individually how much is enough or too much, because it all depends on the individual. Not with just the amount of dancing, but other stressors, and the amount of rest, sleep, and stuff.

My only advice is to make sure you take breaks if you find yourself overtraining, and keep track of your training so you know how far you can go before you have to worry about overtraining.

Take Care,

It gets to a point with any physical activity where you train for it, instead of it being the primary exercise. Rest and proper nutrition have been mentioned. If you aren't already doing so, you may want to include some specific conditioning program, e.g., strength training, pilates, yoga, etc. Strength and flexibility beyond what you can develop just dancing may be what you need to dance more.

Any sport. Either short-term (when you fry your brain trying to do too much at one go-practicing too long, trying to learn too many new concepts at once, etc) or long-term (when you start getting things like repetitive stress injuries.) It depends on you how much is enough or how much is too much, but as a general rule a day off every 3-4 days (ideally with some alternative activity to work different muscles and brain cells ;) ) is a good plan.

I think all of the particulars vary from person to person depending on many things including age...truly, Ii am not sure what actually constitutes over training and I work at a gym part-time...but I do know that if I have over-done it physically, my capacity to execute things well on a lesson goes down...as does the quality of my dancing...and I generally take that as my body, and sometimes my mind, trying to tell me that it is wise to take a break...generally, I can feel when my body is entering a zone where injury is likely and good dancing would be highly unlikely...usually this is every fouth day...but that is specific to me and to my scheduled lessons and workouts...currently that looks like:

mon; one hour of cardio at the gym, four hours of pracice/lessons
tues; 4 hours of practice/lessons..evening gym class optional (zumba or spin)
wed; two hours at gym, cardio and resistance ...three if I am feeling ambitous or some practice in the eve
thurs; two hours of practice...sometimes a gym class
fri; one hour at gym, one hour of practice
sat; one hour at gym...sometimes practice
sun; 2 hours of practice

I sincerely doubt that ...but I happen to be unfortunate enough to have to work really hard to stay at a barely acceptable weight/size...regardless of my fitness level

Glad I'm not the only dancing triathlete out there! People in each world look horrified at me when I tell them about the other.

It was bad enough running the Boulder Boulder one year when the Statue of Liberty passed me running backwards. I don't know if I will survive you two waltzing right on by :p
