Jewelry at USADance events?

Hi all,

Forgive me if this has been discussed before - I had a look around and couldn't find anything ...

The USADance dress code is completely obvious about the 'no stones on your costume in syllabus' part, but I'm still unclear about whether I'm allowed to wear, say, a big sparkly pair of rhinestone earrings. The dress code makes a difference between 'decoration jewelry' and 'personal jewelry', and specifies no 'light effects' on decoration jewelry, but as far as I can see doesn't place any restrictions on stones in personal jewelry.

Can anyone help clarify this for me?

Thanks ...!

In my experience rhinestone earrings and necklaces have been allowed at USA Dance competitions. I was told that 'personal jewelry' refers to earrings, necklaces, rings, etc. 'Decoration jewelry' refers to things like hair decorations or items applied to the dress like a flower or a bow. Although, I've also learned that the rules seem to be interpreted quite differently from official to official.

Really? Here (Canadian Dancesport association) we have restrictions at bronze IDSF dress code from gold up (they are optional in silver). I'm glad I read this since if we cross the border and compete at a USADance event (if its 'sanctioned' that is, which I have not checked) we would need a different set of clothes.

Oh, why is it all so complicated???

By the way, in the IDSF rules I they have the clause:
"3. Dresses and make-up have to respect age and level of dancers."
This is arbitrary, degrading and flashes back to the victorian concept that older people are mutton. Some happen to be quite beautiful - yes, even naked. It seems to be a licence for age discrimination - I wonder if they ran that one by their lawyer. Harumph.

That's what I've deduced as well - decoration jewelry is stuff that is made to be part of the costume, while personal jewelry is stuff that can be worn on its own. The examples wyllo gives are pretty much what I'd give. Maybe another would be a neck piece that is made to go with a dress (eg. same fabric/pattern). Any necklaces/bracelets/earings and other accessories can be worn regardless of how stoned they are, as long as they're clearly independent items. I think that's why there's also the distinction that religious symbols can only be personal jewelry and not decoration (ie, it's fine if you wear a big cross on a chain but not if the pattern is stoned onto your back or something ;))

I sell many Swarovski chokers and wrist cuffs to USA Dance competitors. It's the one place where you can wear all of the bling that you want. I competed in a plum lycra lyrical skirt with a brilliant swarovski earrings, a huge swarovski necklace and my swarovksi wrist cuffs.

You might be jumping to conclusions. I think it's as likely that refers to appropriate, non-provocative costumes on children.

 you are right - I was reading the adult/senior catagory but then flipped to the next section on general issues. That does make sense.
