Just bought my first stones...

I just bought 10 gr. of 20ss volcano and 10 gr. of 16ss light sapphire stones for my standard gown that I made (eggplant/aubergine purple lace overlay (with gloves) and chiffon inserts into base of blue-grey lycra) on danceshopper dot com for $160. Is that a good price? I can't believe I just spent that much on bling for a dress that was my valiant first attempt made with sale fabric (though it doesn't look half bad on the floor; or so I was told at our recent showcase). I'm also worried about the colors. My first inclination was to go with amethyst for the large stones, but as my pro's wife/partner warned, they do look like they flash kind of pink, and the volcano is a cool blue/purple/gold/red combo that might look pretty cool on that dark reddish purple. I just hope it doesn't end up clashing in the end!

I just couldn't stand the thought of dancing my first pro/am comp (silver level) without a single sparkle to my gown! :) And anyway, if I'm going to stone it, I want them to be right. At this rate though, I'm probably never going to be able to afford pro/am again. I guess that's okay, as I have a potential am partnership in the works.

ooo congrats!! I've always wanted a costume with volcano stones they are so pretty on their own (I actually don't really know what they look like on fabric, you should post pictures)

haha the last two dresses I had made I was hoping the volcano stones would work but they didnt match the fabrics I had :( Next one I guess

The colors sound very pretty and elegant, have fun making them sparkle! And thanks for the description of your dress, latingal, perfect timing...I was trying to put together an order for stones for a black latin dress yesterday, wanted to go with jet and volcano, possibly some small black diamond but wasn't sure if it would work. Alternately was considering some of the darker blues with jet...but now am comfortable with going with the volcano. The prices sound average to me, volcano is described as an 'effect' stone, so seems to usually be more expensive.

I find Danceshopeer usually has the best prices on stones. Checked a couple sites and that was the best price I saw. They are very reliable also.. Have had several pairs of custom earrings done by them too.
Have you bought a stone chart with actual stones in all the colors? I learned about that on DF and it's great to be able to check your color stone against your fabric prior to purchasing.

Funny, the wonderful vendor who made and sold me the dress said that if I wanted to have more definite color in the dress that cobalt blue stones in the skirt would be a good add.

The volcano is an interesting stone, depending on the light around it it brings out different hues. Some people might find it a little "dark" but I really love how it looks on the floor. Seems to bring out alot of red and purple hues for me.

Best of luck to you with your dress legato!

Mmmm, such a good idea, cobalt is a great color, really saturated, dark and deep, meridian blue (another effect stone) and montana are nice too. On this one I want a darker shimmer to the dress. I second the suggestion about the color charts with real stones, have one for swarovski and one for preciosa and refer to them frequently. If you have time, let us know how the dress turns out Andreth, I'd love to know if the stone colors work, as aubergine is a good color for me also!

danceshopper.com is the best for buying stones in bulk... when I just need a small amount of stones (say, 70) I go to Joyce Fabric Store in NYC.. they are pretty cheap for small amounts of stones. Good price for small sew on stones too. danceshopper only sells in bulk, which is why their prices are so great when you need a lot of stones in one color :)

I'm glad to hear that danceshopper has better deals; I did shop around a bit and they seemed to be the best, especially when you get free shipping! I do have the color chart. That's partly why I decided against the amethyst stones, because, while they are "safe" and don't clash, they do sparkle with a very light color and I'd rather have a deeper color on the dark lace. The volcano stones blended right in in some lights, and in others stood out and glowed gold or red or blue, which could be really cool...I just hope not garish. Anyway, I will post once I get them going on the dress; I just found out that they were shipped today, so since the comp is in a little less than 3 weeks I'll need to get busy as soon as they arrive!

Oops I mean *small AMOUNTS* of sew on stones..

The stones came today! The volcanos look waaayyy oranger than I thought, with some hot pink in there, so I'm not thrilled. The color actually works pretty well with the purple, but with the grey-blue underlayer showing through it's kind of surprising and not so harmonious. Now I wish I had gone with my other scheme of amethyst and tanzanite AB. Bother. I can't return the stones so I will have to roll with it. This dress has been one fixed mistake after another! I hate $100 + mistakes though. I guess I'll end up with a warmer and more autumn look rather than a cool and subtle one. I just like cool colors on me better in general, but in the end maybe it will be more eye catching on the floor since that dark muted purple and light bluish grey aren't the most vivid colors out there.

Anyone want to buy the 10 gr. of volcano stones? I've decided I don't want to ruin my dress with them (wrong color), but at the same time I don't want to lose all of the money. PM me if you're interested!
