Just for fun: What's your favorite kind of ballroom/latin costume? Why?

I just saw a picture somewhere on social media of Yulia wearing what looked very much like a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. Image searches aren't helping, but if someone else knows which I mean and has a better connection than I do right now could post it!
 
Natalie Paramanov tends to wear very simple designs, sometimes stoned, sometimes not. My feeling is that if you are going with an incredibly simple cut, it better be impeccably made, by someone who knows what they are doing. I would also still bling the he** out of the look with the jewelry, especially if wearing black, like the bottom picture.

Yep...not sure if I'd advise a typical competitor to mimic Joanna or Natalie's approach. I think mindputtee's spot on with recommending patterned fabric, since stones are usually adding a pattern or visual contrast to a dress.

Lio, are you asking out of curiosity or because you want to come up with a new dress that doesn't require stones?

And yes, "spot on" was an intentional pun.
 
Plus those dresses on Natalie above are show dance dresses. When she's on the floor with other couples she is definitely not dressed that simply

I was also going to point out that it helps to actually be Natalie Paramanov :)

I don't think I've seen too many unadorned dresses in competition either (other than obvious practice-wear-type styles of good quality). I think it was the recent webcast of Millenium where the commentators made a great deal of the non-stoned dress of one of the pro smooth dancers.

I have a Latin dress that looks pretty good at the moment, but I'm making a new standard dress and my Latin coach wants me to have a new Latin dress for the national championships at the end of the year. I told her that I had a whole bunch of bright fabric, but there was absolutely no way I could afford the stones for a Latin dress...the only reason I can afford them for standard is because I'm going for a black-on-white look and I'm not too fussed about the quality of jet stones.

So yeah, looking for simple but elegant Latin designs that I could get away with either no stoning, or minimal stoning. The two I've found are:

I love the first one but I don't think I'd have the skill to make it look so sleek. The second one is really simple.
 
To divert the conversation over to Smooth for a second, Galina Zharinov has been wearing super simple, super classy dresses that rely just on gradients and a stoned belt recently and I am all. about. it.


 
I was at my first medalist comp a couple of weeks ago and was shocked that people in pre bronze had really glitzy ballroom and Latin dresses. Mine were very simple and looked great in ballroom due to the mid blue colour so hopefully going to get a latin dress still simple but classic in a brighter colour or not red as so many have red

I don't *think* getting the look of the first one is that hard, it's mostly just a matter of using enough negative ease to make it hug the body. But both are nice, though you might want to get a coach's input on which look is better for your partnership - the first seems to emphasize length and vertical lines while the second seems to bring out the hourglass shape of a figure.

The second will also look better without needing additional fabric or crinoline to be purchased than the first would.

This was a UKA medalist comp they seemed less strict overall on dress code the were no restrictions on dress code for over 12 no matter what level and as long as the dresses do not have stones on for juveniles they were ok with belonged bows in the hair.
I was originally going to get practice wear but got told I would be better getting a dress so got one from Latino but if i do beginner comps I can't have a dress with stones.

Lio, love those 2 dresses (they're actually both on my pinterest board), but then I favour simpler styles - normally just well cut and in a strong colour - to match my dance style (clean and elegant).

Just a thought for you on the dresses: have you discussed with your coach whether it is better to have 2 new dresses, both a little simpler and maybe not quite what he/she has in mind, or to use one older dress and one new kick-knat blinged-out one?
