Just for fun: What's your favorite kind of ballroom/latin costume? Why?

The board seems a bit light today, so I figured I'd throw this out there. It's probably been discussed a bazillion times before, but times change and tastes change, so let's see what you've got!

What's your favorite kind of dress? Why? Feel free to give one for each style! Do you like feathers? Fringe? What colors appeal to you most? Perhaps even more fun commentary, what sorts of costumes make you gag when you see them on the floor?

I know guys don't have quite the same level of interesting clothing, but what do you like to see on them/us (applies more to latin/rhythm or smooth of course)?

in general, I hate anything in latin that resembles a woman looking like a Pomeranian aka, huge mass of crap on her tail...I prefer sleek and simple

likewise, in ballroom I am not a big fan of patterned material and I loathe the cupcake...

basically anything that beverly moore would wear (other than polka dots) is gorgeous to me...I think her level of taste as a pro/am lady is unparalled....she always looks divine

as for men, I am not at all a fan of the open chest look in latin...if he is buff, a tight turtle neck is awesome, if not, a loose white shirt only slightly unbottoned is nice...also, for latin...dudes in rhinestones and ruffles do not work for me...at all

as for ballroom, I prefer my standard guys in tails...I dress up for you

in smooth, my current pro used to wear a black outfit that had a white collar and white cuffs which I thought was very eye catching and smart looking...not sure where it went but I am sad that it is gone

if the guy is tall, I really like the long vests that go down over the top of the pantline, maybe to the crease at the hip, not so much for a shorter, wider man

i also strongly dislike patterns for smooth... and the cupcake look also doesnt make sense to me in smooth... thats more of a standard style to me... for latin/rhythm, i REALLY dont like long skirts... and by long skirts i dont mean the ones that are long on one side, i mean the ones that could almost be sleek smooth dresses with a slit. i wanna see legs!!!!

wrt long latins; sometimes the long ones look elegant but other times, you see the women either restricted by them or nearly stepping on them...and I mean even at the highest levels...

wrt cupcakes, i just don't like them at all...i occasioanlly see one that nicely siuts the lady wearing them, and are simple enough else where that they look sweet, but most of the time they simply are too over the top for me...

again , these are only my personal preferences, which I understand amount to...well...not much :)

am also not a fan of the over abundance of nude mesh...I find that it rarely looks good...stoned, unstoned-regardless...not my thing

I kinda hate feathers on women's dresses... they always seem to fall off, leaving feathers everywhere on the dance floor. Although perhaps the one upside is that at events where John DePalma is the MC, he will warn everyone that "there is a chicken loose in the ballroom."

I have always thought that the slight scattering of them (feathers) here and there on standard gowns looked interesting if one was petite and the rest of the dress was simple, but I would never wear one myself for that very reason

Haha, I'm always entertained after watching a few champ rounds. It's not necessarily always the dancing, but the broom sweep necessary to get the "carebear-vomit-colored muppet fuzz" off the floor between rounds.

I agree - I absolutely abhor feathers on ballroom gowns. No matter how heavy or light they are, they always end up off of the dress and right in the footpath of some poor unsuspecting couple.

I remember watching the UK Open video the other day and one competitor had feathers on her standard dress. In quickstep, she and her partner would stop abruptly in a corner and her dress would MOLT... an explosion of feathers... all over.

Then again, maybe it's like SuperMario for the dance floor. Except instead of leaving turtle shells behind you to trip up your enemies, you just leave slippery feathers. :)

One thing I have always liked about our dancing ladies is that they have excellent taste in their dance and evening clothes; always well dressed.
