Does anyone have any tips for someone learning to bellydance on their own with no teacher, classes, etc. and does anyone know a site you can get free online classes or information online?

Have you looked at dancersdreamland.com? I know dancersdreamland was way into bellydancing, and her site (at least used to) have tons of information. Might be worth a look. I'll head over there now, and make sure the site is still supported. (I haven't seen ddl in a while... wondre how the wedding/marriage is going. :? )

Be right back. :car:

Darn it!! It looks like she's taken the site down. :( :( That was such a great site!! So much information in one place.

I guess it's back to square one. :google:

Hey! When you're thirteen and on a budget, you have to work with what's available.

Finding clips was pretty easy. I just googled "belly dancing video clip" and got quite a few hits. The first two were visionarydance.com and arabicdancing.net There were many others. I don't think this is the best way, since the muscle isolations involved in belly dance seem mighty complicated to me. Precise muscle control. It seems to me you'd need some help from a pro in order to learn.

Hmm... how to get that cheaply, I'm not sure. In Orlando, where I used to live, a local adult education center used to give belly dancing group classes at reasonable rates. And a couple local gyms used to give belly dancing classes at unreasonable rates.

But do try the library, too. There are some belly dancing videos, DVD's and even instructional books out there. 8)

Your local library probably has some belly dance instruction videos.

lol!
Why do you find that funny? I don't know what libraries in Europe are like, but in my small rural town of 9,000 the library has several belly dance videos.

Yes. I think that was a good suggestion. The local libraries in my old town had VHS, DVD and books on belly dancing. The current library I use doesn't have DVD's yet. But it has books and videos.

Works for me. 8)

There are lots of sites that have free clips of performances, but I don't know of any free instruction. I am learning by video. What type are you interested in? Cabaret, American Tribal Style, etc...? For tribal, go to the FatChanceBellyDance web site (just add .com). They sell their videos online. Again, if you google, you'll find tons of resources.

I would also suggest buying or renting a video. I had to laugh when someone suggested going to their local library because I can't imagine my small town (7,000 people) having that there.....but I'm definately going to ask! Also, google your town and belly dancing and see what comes up. I was surprised to find that our little community college offers classes.

By the way, dancersdreamland.com is back up. I guess it was down for maintenance, the last time I checked.

A bunch of bellydancing links with some clips, and some links to suppliers and costumers. 8)
