Just need a presription for an antibiotic

It makes me mad. I already pay $300/month for health insurance I don't use. I just have it to protect me from major financial loss in the event of a serious condition that involves hospitalization or long term care.

I have a bad cold and all I need is an antibiotic.
Just to "see" a doctor costs over $100.
My wife is sick too.

First, any doctors out there that would prescribe an antibiotic?
I'm so mad with the health profession right now I went out and created www.healthcareforums.org
Cheer me up and go make a post to help me get started.
I think I'll copy this one over there.

David, I would love to support your new forum, but I can't find any link to register and create a profile. Help!!

I feel the need to point out the fact that a cold is caused by a virus, not a bacterial infection, and therefore antibiotics won't do much about it.

Excellent point...and there's some nasty colds going around. My dance partner, our significant others, and myself have been suffering from some lingering cold from hell for about a month now. I know other people with it, too. I'm slowly getting better, though. Last night I even felt well enough to leave the house for awhile -- I was getting "cabin fever" and had to get out!!

NeoDevin made a good point here. Nothing much you can do but wait it out.

I got really sick over New Years and don't currently have health insurance as I'm fully into alternative medicine. However I was feeling so bad that I wanted to see an MD to make sure I didn't have something serious.

All in all, it cost 330 dollars just to talk to a doctor who spent about 5 minutes talking to me, and another 10 doing a test. Turns out it was a viral infection...sorry we can't help you, here take this chart and snort some salt water, you'll feel fine (luckily I later went to a naturalpathic doctor who was able to help!).

As I was getting ready to leave, I heard him talking to another patient, using the same words like a broken record. Gave me a lot of confidence in his ability!

I agree...the current medical world is conprised of crooks and drug dealers who can't seem to cure anything. Anyway that's a rant for another day. :?

I let it ride until about 6 weeks...then I'll make the appointment. We pay something like $25 as a co-payment, so it's not miserable. I *always* ask for samples, too. Usually if you make a comment about the high cost of drugs, they'll give you something if they have it. Scored some zithromax (6 pills) last time and it worked like a charm. Would have cost me another $35 if I had to pay for it.

Honestly, the best thing that works for me to get something out of my system is LOTS of sleep.

And even if you have something that an antibiotic can fix, doctors are getting more and more hesitant to prescribe antibiotics. Apparently, more and more bacteria are developing antibiotic-resistant strains because of overuse or misuse of antibiotics (as in not taking the course as prescribed. :? )

That tea recipe aounds delicious, BTM. 8)

I usually go with my Mom's old citrus tea -- meaning, combine slices of anything citrus you have (mostly lemon, but oranges are nice, too) in a few cups of water. Bring it to a boil. Steep for a while. Add honey and booze of your choice, then go to sleep. Not sure what works -- if it's the lemon, the honey, the booze or the sleep. But I usually wake up feeling better. 8)

Hey, if you know what you want, I can get it for cheap w/o a script.....

I feel your pain, medical care is so expensive. We had 2 preemies, we still don't technically *own* our children and they are 3 and 5. (I'd like to see them try to repo them, tho. LOL! Ok, ok, there are days I really would like them repo'ed, hahaha! But most days, no....)

At any rate, we move here, a developing country, and medical is CHEAP! It costs about $6 to see the family doctor. (And our current doctor is a neighbor, he always refuses payment, so I bake him an apple pie and take it to his house. It costs me more for the pie, not factoring my time, than if I'd just forked over the money. )

However, proper medical care is not a guarantee. I really have to screen my doctors. I worry that I'll be in a major accident and not be able to be an advocate for myself and get the care I need. So what do you want - cheap medical care or good medical care?

I wasn't trying to say anything bad about doctors, just pointing out the fact that antibiotics don't help with viral infections. There are many things that can be cured by modern medicine, many more things that can be prevented... the common cold just isn't one of them.

Another plug for teas you coffe drinkers. Switch over and live happier and healthier!! :D

Yes, my wife and I both are trying to simply wait it out. In the past we would go to the doctor only after being sick for several days. Even after getting the prescription we weren't sure if it was time or drugs that cured us. The daytimes are okay, just night and mornings are rough.

I know I'm a hopeless forum junkie, but I hope you might post on my new forum to help me get it going. I see ReneeJoan already did...cool. 8)
