Just when you thought you knew ever style of tango . . .

This thread (and the like) are why I never pursued tango. Why can't people just get along? It's a beautiful dance. But it's not God and it's not religion. It's a dance. There's no gospel of tango, is there? Why do the purists not see that they're scaring people away from the thing they love so much?

Ya know? Seriously.

I count my blessings that I encountered AT with absolutely zero prior knowledge or exposure. I got addicted before I was ever exposed to all of the b.s. I got involved with D-F with a totally different set of AT posters.

I sometimes wonder... If I'd gotten a taste of the D-F AT board as it is now before I went down to BsAs, or shortly thereafter, would I have been turned off from the whole thing? I'm just so done with it all. Just...done. I have neither the time nor the energy in my life for nonsense...and faith has no place in my life, be it for god or tango. It's such a turn-off when every day (it seems like) I have to fight the urge to be sarcastic in my responses.

It's quite a shame...

OTOH, ballroom has its American/International divisions, and the Pro/Pro-Am/Am-Am divisions, and the social/competitive divisions. And I've seen those discussions get pretty heated. Perhaps, since AT doesn't really have the competitive side of things, or a pro-am tradition (outside of private lessons)...maybe this is just the same contrary-ness in a different form.

I've still lost patience with it, though...

I'm just sayin' ...

Don't kill the dance with your passion for the dance. People are listening. Ya know?

You're right, P. Other dances have their own quarrels. I don't have a lot of patience for those, either. Dance. Be happy. And leave other people alone. Not rocket science. Why does everybody have to dance my way or else be WRONG (in capital letters?)

Its good to know that some Americans understand and know how to use sarcasm ( and irony?)

I never have :D

Irony? That's "like iron", yes?

"Etymology

Irony is believed to have been imported to English from the Latin ironia in 1502, in turn from the Greek eironeia, a conjugation of eiron - to dissemble, such as lying by omission or by concealment of true intent. During the word's Latin use, the lie by omission was dropped from its meaning; ironia is simply lying by concealment of true intent (some group these two actions under the term affected ignorance.) On conversion to english, this definition has been expanded to include not only lies, but some jokes of subtlety.

It is important to bear this history in mind when one attempts to nail down what irony is, as it clears up why the word means specifically things phrased to bury connotation behind denotation. Irony has nothing to do with something coming back to haunt one; it's about doubletalk, two-faced speech and the sly underpinnings of sarcasm and trickery through misphrased honesty."

Pygmalion, your post saddens me, and it touches on why I do not participate in the discussions like I did in the past. We used to discuss technique across styles, and when there was a difference because of style, we would discuss the movement - We would not tell anybody they were "wrong," dancing "fake" tango, "ripping people off", etc.

Maybe somebody will read your words and take them to heart. God knows that I have ranted and raved off board countless times about this extremely rude minority of small-minded individuals.

It didn't occur to me until now that discussions on this board could reflect negatively on tango. If that is the case, I will withdraw all participation.

I agree with every single word of this.

Oh, I thought it meant that the item had lots of iron in it.

I think the discussion does sometimes reflect negatively on tango, but you withdrawing your participation won't help Me. I think the best way to fight it is to keep posting constructive and helpful information. :friend:

I thought it was like rain on your wedding day?

"Ironic; Alanis Morrisette;
Irish comedian Ed Byrne has performed a skit in which he jokingly attacks the song for its lack of ironies: "The only ironic thing about that song is it's called 'Ironic' and it's written by a woman who doesn't know what irony is. That's quite ironic." Byrne then tries to give the song 'the benefit of the doubt' by coming up with scenarios where the various unfortunate incidents, mentioned in the song, actually would represent irony.[6] Popular satirists Berger and Wyse also parodied the song in their cartoon strip The Pitchers. In an episode where superhero Irony Man (a pun on Iron Man) likens his superpowers to lyrics from Morrisette's song, causing his cohorts to rename him "The Man from Alanis" (a pun on The Man from Atlantis).[7]" Wikediddlypedia
