Kids' Latin Lessons in Brooklyn

New in NY

My 7-year-old has expressed an interest in taking lessons. I would like to get her started in a school with strong instruction, but I also would like a school that is fun and welcoming. I am looking at Kaiser, Dance Passion and Kings DanceSport. Does anyone have any first hand experience with any of these schools? I am particularly interested in learning about the quality of instruction in the children's classes and the atmosphere.

I have some friends who come from Kaiser and had a great experience. The school also has a reputation for turning out some pretty awesome dancers. *ahem* eugene and maria?

Thanks for your responses. With Kaiser, I do know they have the best reputation as far as instruction. I was curious to know what the ambiance is for the kids, so I am glad to hear that your friends enjoyed it, NonieS. I am hoping that the intro level classes are enjoyable for the children, as opposed to what I call the strict and scolding Russian ballet method. Daughter is only 7 and just starting, so I can make no assumptions as to whether this is something she will do long-term or if she will have interest in competing.

I was just at VK studio comp - and the kids definitely seemed to have a great time. British Champion, Oksana Zolotarevskaya is another teacher at Kaiser, and the kids seem to adore her. It is very cute.

Its been a long time since I visited, but I spent a couple of days observing the studio's "goings on," and it definitely struck me as a warm and supportive environment that people enjoyed.

Ive been impressed by the number of parents who stay through their children's lessons - it does not seem to be a drop off and pick up culture, or at least not the part of it visible in adult studios.

This might also mean that you could observe classes (maybe even talk with other parents) before enrolling your child.

Casting another vote for Kaiser, although we are from Staten Island branch:p The teachers are FABULOUS at making kids enjoy ballroom dancing! The beginners have fun and play lots of games while learning their first steps. Trust me, it is far from Russian ballet method (tried that and my daughter hated it but LOVES ballroom) In my studio, the kids are encouraged to come and "sample" their first class to decide if they want it or not, the parents are welcome to observe, too.
I have 2 kids there (a boy and a girl) and both go to classes religiously (even when I offer to skip it, they insist on going). They have a lot of fun!!
IlyZislin, We were on the comp last Saturday, too :p. It is amazing to see how talented all these kids are!!!

Thank you all for the very encouraging comments. It sounds great! I am looking at the 19th Ave/Bath Ave location and had a nice telephone conversation with them yesterday.
Purl, I have a question for you: The studio told me that their sessions begin in September and run for the school year, but that it would be fine for my daughter to start at any time. Based on your experience, do you think a 7 yr. old newcomer could join the class now and not be too confused if most of the other students have been there for several months? I will probably take her this week or next to try the class, but would be interested in your view as a parent. Thanks.

I'd say your daughter should be fine to start now.The beginners do not move fast at all, they are still learning the very basic steps. My son started in June ;) when he turned 8 and caught on without a problem. Good luck and let us now how it goes!

Posting an update since you were all so helpful with your comments earlier this year. I was set on Kaiser, but the schedule did not work out for us. DD was not able to start until this fall, and is taking lessons with Joseph's Dance Studio - lovely teacher who sometimes works with me and DH is also a children's instructor here. DD is having a great time and we are having fun practicing together (although it is challenging to try to figure out leading when I am still learning to follow ...). I have come to learn that Joseph is/was(?) Patryk & Anna's coach. First local comp is this weekend.
BTW, what brought this thread back to mind was that I noticed on the web yesterday that Eugene and Maria have opened their own studio - Brooklyn DanceSport Club.

I know virtually nothing about LI geography but the Nyemchek's studio is also out there somewhere isn't it?? I would guess they have kids classes :)
