Largest proam comps

I was curious about officially what are the largest ( most entries) pro am comps lately. Every comp is saying they have 'record breaking entries', but what officially is the biggest comp? Millennium? Ohio? Emerald? Holiday? Does anyone know which comp officially has the most entries?

I think you hit all the huge ones right there. Any comp that requires 6 days I generally consider the "biggest." My personal favorite is Millennium. USDC is another huge one you forgot to put up there, it's another 6 day comp... but it never feels like there are as many competitors there.

As far as the most competitive? I may be a bit biased, but I've encountered more competition in pro-am at smaller comps on the east coast than at the OSB.

I find "most entries" be be a bit of misleading thing- because some comps - like millennium, etc. just have rising star and proficiency entries for every level of bronze- which means some people can enter the 4 levels of bronze singles in their age and below, plus rising star bronze singles at their age and below, plus proficiency, plus open bronze at 3 levels and 2 ages, plus rising star open bronze at 3 levels and 2 ages, plus 6 different 2 dance championships, etc etc.

So sure, there might be twice as many entries, but there's the same amount of people as a smaller comp. and you end up diffusing your competition across all those different options.

To me, the biggest ones that people pay attention to are Ohio, usdc, holiday, millennium, emerald, and embassy.

Manhattan Dancesport Championships is another one. My teacher has a list of six "big/important/whatever" competitions that he includes Manhattan on...now I'm going to have to ask him what they are. I wonder if it was 6 plus USDC....

I've done Manhattan and loved it but it was not the size of the other comps I've mentioned though it was a good sized comp and very competitive.

Which east coast smaller comps did you find more competitive?

I agree...I was just wondering if anyone had actual information of which of these 6 officially have the most entries.

Honestly it depended more on the competition on who showed up that year. The ones in NY tended to be very good for Latin. Manhattan might be the most consistent for that... although NYDF generally always has a strong Latin field. It's also kind of by itself in terms of it's calendar (February) in spite of not being a flagship competition by NDCA standards.

Looking at the calendar, we also forgot to list the Southern States Dancesport Championships. That's another 6 day one, but to be honest... I don't think I've known anyone to even go to that one. But it's a 6 day comp so it has to be filled with entries.

Not even close. It's not really 6 days. Tuesday's a reg day. It's really like a 3 day comp spread out over 5 days. You won't see a semi final in anything except maybe senior bronze smooth. It's got all the hallmarks of comps I personally don't attend because they feel like money grabs for lots of heats from small amount of people. There are EIGHT LEVELS of bronze single dances. And 1 dance and two dance championships. And different kinds of scholarships. It is not in any sense of the word a major or large comp.

However, if you'd like to dance a ton of heats against 1 person and stay at the ritz, then it's gonna be your thing.

So like the Caribbean Dancesport Classic then in San Juan. :meh:

Well it does look fun anyway... And it's at the Ritz on the beach. From what my friend told me it wasn't a very competitive competition though.

Boston has some great competitive smaller comps too.

southern states is not a big comp....it may stretch out to that many days (though I don't remember it that way and cannot fathom why) but it is not a big comp

these are all big...and I would add, usdc and embassy at well as Manhattan....not sure which is the biggest and I think that might be shifting anyhow
