I have always wondered about the Salsa events and their "Lifetime Achievement Awards". Should there be some sort of criteria in giving these awards as other organizations have? I can see a Celia Cruz or a Tito Puente getting such an award. Some events give them to people who are barely in their 30's. Have they reached their lifetime of achievement? To get a lifetime achievement award in Hollywood you have to be dead or barely make it to the stage! Check out the the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards which are awarded by the Recording Academy to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.

Not a bad group! Most Lifetime Achievement Awards require you to be a certain age to qualify, like 60. It usually is an acknowledgement of superior achievement in an entire career. Look at some of the receipients at Salsa events. Do they meet any of these criteria? Maybe giving the awards out has become a political ploy instead. What do you think? What should be the criteria? If there are none, so to speak, then does it become a joke? Although the Lifetime Achievement Award is subjective, it still should have basic criteria for it to mean something. Age I think should be one as your achievement should come at the end of your career, not during it. I think it would be a good idea to see how other well known organizations pick their receipients and use that as a guide. What do you think?
