L'shanah tovah!

Mazel tov! (not quite sure if that's the appropriate greeting for the holiday, but it felt right ) Or maybe...L'chaim!

Thanks for the well wishes! I know there's at least a couple other Jewish DFers, and yesterday was our New Year, Rosh Hashanah. (People more religious than I celebrate it for two days.)

HnF--L'chaim (to life) works for me! The Jewish New Year (and the 10 Days of Awe that follow) are tied to the idea of repenting and trying to get written in the book of life for the next year. L'shanah tovah, which I said above, is the traditional phrase. It is an abbreviation of an even longer phrase meaning "May you be inscribed [in the book of life] for a good year." So a sort of similar idea.

QPO--I looked it up, because I was intrigued, and you do have some Jewish people in Australia! It's not a huge number of people, but we're there.

Got this from the Virtual Jewish Library:
"Today, between 115,000 and 120,000 Jews live in Australia, out of a total population of over 20 million. The Jewish community of Australia is the largest Jewish community in the East Asian Pacific Region. 80 percent of Australian Jews live in Melbourne (50,000) and Sydney (45,000), but there are also significant communities in Perth, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Adelaide. Melbourne is still considered the more religious of the two cities, with about 80 percent of its Jews declaring themselves traditional. Nonetheless, Sydney boasts numerous synagogues and Jewish organizations as well, and a very high rate of aliya. [CCM's note: This means moving to Israel permanently.] The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) is the elected representative organization of the Jewish community. Overall, there are 81 synagogues and 18 day schools in Australia, and several Jewish newspapers and periodicals. More than 50 percent of Jewish students are enroled in Jewish schools, which is the highest rate anywhere in the world with the exception of Israel. Australia also has a low rate of intermarriage compared to other Diaspora countries. There have been two Jewish Australian governor-generals and several Jewish Australians have served in senior leadership positions in the country's military."

Because those in charge of the religious minutiae (i.e., with nothing better to do) decided that they needed to cover their bases and assume that Jerusalem is the center of the universe, so a particular moment in Jerusalem has to be translated at the exact same moment around the world.

Give huge credit to new buddy teacher as she was at comp competing with me last saturday, even with the holiday. Thanks Ren!
