Does anyone on this forum compete in this comp in Birmingham, AL? I did a search of the threads, but did not find any mention of it.

I will be dancing at this comp. I am only doing 6 dances.. I don't normally do fads comps.just doing this one.

It's done by Fred Astaire and is June 1st. This will be my first competition and my instructor has me down for 20 dances or heats or whatever they are called, including one open thingy (I still don't know the dance lingo) for our Tango routine. I'm nervous as h@ll, but am trying to look at it as just fun.

Does FADS not participate in any other comps? I am clueless about how all this works and wonder if it would be a good idea to try an independent studio when I move to another state this summer. Any advice?

Welcome to DF Beetlebug!

Good luck with your first competition. Just go out there and have a great time!

As far as independent studio vs. chain studio, well we've had a lot of discussion on that in prior threads, and yes they tend to be - er - strongly opinionated. In the end it comes down to being an informed consumer. Shop around and take a look what options you have, the level of instruction you can obtain, the commitments you are asked to make, and of course the prices! I prefer independent studios, but others here might prefer the chains. Good luck!

Whether FA studios compete at open competitions depends on the studio, and in some respect, on you.

Pretty much any FA studio is going to compete/offer entries in their own competitions. That much i sa given. Some will also offer entries in open comps though. If your studio doesn't, ask about it. Many times they will be willing to send their pros to an open comp with you. My studio doesn't normally go to any open comps, but I'm sure if I asked owner would work something out to let me "borrow" my pro for a day or two to do an open comp. :) Parent's FA studio does some open comps, though which ones varies by where it is, whether there's a lot of interest in it, etc. So best advice is just to ask.

i was at the comp,, beetlebug i didn't see you.Sorry I didn't get to meet you..How did it go for you?

Liz,

I think I probably did see you and now that I think about it, you were probably sitting right next to me.

I absolutely loved the comp! I was so nervous for the first few dances, then I started just having fun. It was an unbelievable time and I cannot wait to do another!

Did you enjoy it?

yep we were just one chair apart, how funny. I had a good time. Still trying to work out all the issues in my new routines.
