Medium newbie friendly ballroom competition for 2021

Hi dancers,

I was thinking of doing some sort of goal competition for next year. What's a nice medium sized US competition to attend, that's newbie friendly?
Not so big like USDC, but not so tiny that only people from that city goes to it.

Just would be nice to have an event to work towards in 2021.

then that’s easy- I’d have different suggestions if it were latin it standard.
Depends on where you live and if you want to travel much...

some decent midsized ones that I can think of offhand-
Vegas open march
Ballroom beach bash April (although this one has gotten pretty big because it’s FUN and it’s also expensive)
New York dance festival - february
Tri-state march
Virginia state july
Empire august
Capital August

NYDF has gotten much bigger, especially in Latin; I think they had over 10,000 entries this past February, and my experience of it is not warm and fuzzy

Empire has gotten bigger, too; not as warm and fuzzy as some others

Also in the Northeast: Paragon Open in October; nice people, well run, nice balance of fun and competitive

I was not super enthralled with that venue. Yes, it was beautiful, but I rank it low on the practicality scale for a competition. The walk from my hotel room to the ballroom felt like two miles through tunnels. And the walls are paper thin... I had to go knock on someone's door in an adjacent room at 11 pm to ask them to turn down music they were playing. I had all sorts of flight issues, both coming and going. There's a short flight from Asheville to Charlotte that was delayed (and this was like an 8 A.M. flight), so they piled us like sardines into a 10-person van (this happens often enough that they were prepared with it) and drove us the 2 hours to Charlotte instead.

This is how I feel about so many spots, including Hilton Head Island and some resorts in California. If I can’t get from the airport to the hotel within 30 minutes, I don’t like it. (And it better be a “real” airport, too.) As for the Grove Park Inn, lucky for me I can drive there in less than 90 min. One of my professional organizations holds its annual conference there every other year, so I know EXACTLY what you mean about the 2-mile hike thru tunnels to get from the guest room to the meeting rooms & ballrooms. No such thing as “I’ll just hop back to my room in between heats to grab that item I forgot.”

IMO, though,The Spa there is worth it.
 
Wisconsin state is really nice! Usually has a decent turnout and is well run and fun. I was really bummed to miss it this year. But also seconding St Louis. Motown showdown is nice- but you never know the size, one year it’s a decent turnout, one year it’s small.
