Mens' shirts

Ok, my 2 partners and I have decided which dances we will be competing in next June. I will be doing Am. smooth with both and Am Rythme with just one.
We will be competing at Bronze in all dances. Should I invest in smooth and Latin style dance shirts? I do want to look nice for these two ladies! ;)

There are a number of vendors who have sales throughout the year. A good white or black smooth shirt (zipper front so that you can wear a tie) should cost $100 - $200. If you get the smooth shirt in black - you can wear it for rhythm if you don't want to show much chest area. But, a nice black Latin/Rhythm shirt will be an additional $100 - $200 and is a good investment. Both of these shirts should last you for a long time if you take care of them - hand wash, cold water, woolite and dry on a towel instead of in the dryer. PM me and I will tell you who has sales right now.

Before you buy, look into costume restrictions for your competition, if any. If you're dancing Adult syllabus in a USA Dance comp, there'll be some things you can't wear -- check out the USA Dance rulebook. If you're only dancing in senior age categories or non-USA Dance, you're probably good with whatever you want, but it still makes sense to find out for sure.

I am not certain what the rules are concerning costumes at the Colorado Star Ball. What is the defination of a costume? Is a nice smooth shirt a costume? Should I just wear an off the shelf dress shirt? One of my partners has purchased an amazing formal dress from a local shop and I having it altered, is that considered a costume? I want to learn this before we arrive! lol

Isn't there a link to the rule book here in DF somewhere? I believe I've seen it, but can't remember where.

Well, first congrats on making the decision. The purchase should be based on how much you wish to invest. You could purchase two shirts; one black and one white, to have a variety. However, if you are on a budget you could get away with a black zipper shirt with a collar. We have them on our website and you can find that info through my profile. We also have an ad on the top of the ballroom section There is a style (GS03) that does nicely. It is also available with satin collar and cuffs which is different and really really stylish. My instructors in recent years have preferred a black shirt in smooth vs traditional white. You can then wear the black shirt with zipper down, and close the collar to wear with a tie. Finally, in smooth spice it up by choosing either a nice straight tie or even a fashion conscious bow tie. My next smooth may actually include a colorful "Tie your Own Bow Tie" just to be different.:p
