Men's Standard shoe, does the 1" heel makes a difference to the dancing?

I am curious to find out if guys find a difference in dancing in their 1" standard shoes versus those times they are dancing in practise shoes with flat heels...
Does that extra heel help the dancing? Are there any significant benefits? Is the feeling the same?

Personally Sam I like to have as low of a heel as possible! Simply because that means more stability for me. Basically closer to the floor I am more I like it! Hope this helps! Cheers!

I wasn't aware that men would wear a different heel height in a practice shoe. My practice and comp shoes are identical except for the finish (patent for comp). Both have a 3/4" heel plus whatever small amount the suede adds.

I've tried dance sneakers for bad floors. I don't like the feeling of my heel being too low in those so I stopped using them.

Well when I was referring to flat shoes, I was thinking of the jazz shoes that are made of very thin leather and barely have .25" heel... I heard that the standard shoes help the person stand straight...

Oh. I wouldn't wear jazz shoes for ballroom practice. I think you want to wear something as close to your competition footwear as possible to minimize differences in sensation. That's the other reason I gave up on the dance sneakers.

I agree. Jazz shoes will not be something to look into if you want to dance standard or smooth for that matter.

Because I tend to really roll/carry weight through the standing heel to sustain backwards actions, I wouldn't want a shoe with no heel at all.

On the other hand, I picked up some that had a 30mm/1.25" heel and found that very disconcerting. They throw the weight much more forward onto the ball of foot, and the heel almost wants to pull off the shoe at its front when you roll your weight to the back edge.

I tried dancing ballroom for fun after practicing a jazz routine in my jazz shoes. It wasn't very comfortable, especially heel leads.

Once we tried to do foxtrot as a general dance between latin rounds...we had to stop halfway down the floor since it was so uncomfortable. It was the weirdest feeling I've ever had dancing.

Yeah totally, I wouldn't even feel a 1" heel considering that I dance in 2 1/2" heels all the time! It's funny to hear the guys complain about such a tiny heel in their Standard shoes -- and plus they have nice flat wide heels, not the tiny slim ones that the ladies wear. Even a ladies flared heel is tiny tiny compared to what the men dance on.

Getting back to the jazz shoes, I read somewhere that they aren't so great for ballroom dancing because they are flimsy. Better than being stuck to the floor in sneakers, I suppose, but if I were a guy I'd just wear leather ballroom shoes for practicing ballroom in.

I have used jazz shoes to go social dancing at places that tend to have dust/dirty floors that will mess up my other shoes more than I would want. They work fine for the short term but my feet have to work harder. I wouldn't use them to practice for serious competition though

I *SO* want to see you dance in court shoes.... can we add that to the DF auctions next year? :D

Actually I am fairly curious what it would be like - but "fairly curious" is equal to about half the cost and half the difficulty of aquiring some in my size.

I don't think it's just the height of the heel though, also the placement of the back edge and security of attachment to the foot. Feeling like the heel is folding/about to tear off is not a good feeling at any height.

How does it feel for you to dance in 3-1/2" heels?
