Most moving lyrics of all time

What do you think are the most moving song lyrics of all time? (Doesn't have to be dance-related, and you can have more than one.)

I'll start off with one to get the ball rolling... though I could have chosen from many....

"Oh, my love, my darling, I hunger for your touch
the long, lonely night...
and time goes by so slowly
and time can do so much...
I need your love... I need your love,
God speed your love
to me."

This one would be near the top of the list for us:

Remember when I was young
And so were you
And time stood still
Love was all we knew
You were the first and so was I
We made love and then you cried
Remember when

Remember when we vowed our vowels
And walked the walk
And gave our hearts
Made the start and it was hard
We lived and learned life through curves
There was joy and there was hurt
Remember when

Remember when old ones die
And new were born
Life was changed
This December rearranged
We came together and fell apart
We broke each other's hearts
Remember when

Remember when the sound of little feet was the music
We danced to week to week
Brought back the love we found trust
Voweled we'd never give it up
Remember when

Remember when thirty seemed so old
Now lookin back
It's just a stepping stone
To where we are where weve been
We said we'd do it all again
Remember when

Remember when
We said when we turned gray
When the children grow up and move away
We wont be sad; we'll be glad
For all the life we've had
And we'll remember when

Remember when
Remember when :D :D

Wow. Annie's song is my favorite. It's in another thread somewhere, but what the heck. Here's the first verse. :D

You fill up my senses
Like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime
Like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert
Like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses
Come fill me again

Thanks K&R and pygmalion, and here's another one (about the same vintage as Annie's Song, I think) that always affects me, not sure why:

The wind is in from Africa,
last night I couldn't sleep,
Oh you know it sure is hard to leave here, Carey,
but it's really not my home
maybe it's been too long a time since I was scramblin' down in the street
but they got me used to that clean white linen and that fancy French cologne
Oh, Carey, get out your cane
and I'll put on my finest silver
Let's go to the Mermaid Cafe, have fun tonight
I said, oh, you're a mean old daddy but you're out of sight.

'Carey', Joni Mitchell 8)

...y merci, pascal! Mais je comprends seulement un peu... j'ai oublie beaucoup. J 'ai besoin de une dictionnaire Francaise...

Probably anything from "Toad the Wet Sprocket".
There is really beautiful imagery in the song "All I Want", kind of how I feel most of the time:

nothin's so loud
as hearing when we lie
the truth is not kind
and you've said neither am I
but the air outside so soft is saying everything
everything

all I want is to feel this way
to be this close, to feel the same
all I want is to feel this way
the evening speaks, I feel it say

nothin's so cold
as closing the heart when all we need
is to free the soul
but we wouldn't be that brave I know
and the air outside so soft, confessing everything
everything

and it won't matter now
whatever happens will be
though the air speaks of all we'll never be
it won't trouble me

and it feels so close
let it take me in
let it hold me so
I can feel it say

How do you keep the music playing
How do you make it last
How do keep the song from fading
Too fast

How do you lose yourself to someone
And never lose your way
How do you not run out of new things
To say

And since you know we're always changing
How can it be the same
You're sure your heart will fall apart
Each time you hear her name

If we can be the best of lovers
Yet be the best of friends
If we can try with every day
To make it better as it goes
With any luck than I suppose
The music never ends

The most incredible tango dancer I have ever danced with in my life sent me an mp3 file of "Hijo de la Luna." It was sung in Spanish, so I did not understand the lyric, but the song was so beautiful it absolutely tore my heart to shreds and still reduces me to tears every time I hear it. Here is an English translation of the lyric:

Son of the Moon

Foolish is he who doesn't understand.

A legend tells of a gipsy woman
Who pleaded with the moon until dawn.
Weeping she begged
At the break of dawn
To marry a gipsy man.

"You'll have your man, tawny skin,"
Said the full moon from the sky.
"But in return I want the first child
That you have with him.
Because she who sacrifices her child
So that she is not alone,
Isn't likely to love it very much."

Chorus:

Moon, you want to be mother,
But you cannot find a love
Who makes you a woman.
Tell me, silver moon,
What you intend to do
With a child of flesh.
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha,
Son of the moon.

From a cinnamon-skinned father
A son was born,
White as the back of an ermine,
With grey eyes instead of olive --
Moon's albino child.
"Damn his appearance!
This is not a gipsy man's son
And I will not put up with that."

Chorus

Believing to be dishonoured,
The gipsy went to his wife,
A knife in his hand.
"Whose son is this?
You've certainly fooled me!"
And he wounded her mortally.
Then he went to the woodlands
With the child in his arms
And left it behind there.

Chorus

And the nights the moon is full
It is because the child
Is in a good mood.
And if the child cries,
The moon wanes
To make it a cradle.
And if the child cries,
The moon wanes
To make it a cradle.

No wonder this song struck through my heart like a knife.

ReneeJoan,

'Son of the Moon', is, as you say, beautiful. I speak Spanish and I will search the Net for the Spanish lyrics. Thanks so much.

Rosa:

Here's the Spanish, original, lyric:

Hijo de la Luna

Tonto el que no entienda.

Cuenta una leyenda
Que una hembra gitana
Conjuró a la luna
Hasta el amanecer.
Llorando pedía
Al llegar el día
Desposar un calé.

"Tendrás a tu hombre,
Piel morena,"
Desde el cielo
Habló la luna llena.
"Pero a cambio quiero
El hijo primero
Que le engendres a él.
Que quien su hijo inmola
Para no estar sola
Poco le iba a querer."

Estribillo:
Luna quieres ser madre
Y no encuentras querer
Que te haga mujer.
Dime, luna de plata,
Qué pretendes hacer
Con un niño de piel.
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha,
Hijo de la luna.

De padre canela
Nació un niño
Blanco como el lomo
De un armiño,
Con los ojos grises
En vez de aceituna --
Niño albino de luna.
"¡Maldita su estampa!
Este hijo es de un payo
Y yo no me lo callo."

Estribillo

Gitano al creerse deshonrado,
Se fue a su mujer,
Cuchillo en mano.
"¿De quién es el hijo?
Me has engañado fijo."
Y de muerte la hirió.
Luego se hizo al monte
Con el niño en brazos
Y allí le abandonó.

Estribillo

Y en las noches
Que haya luna llena
Será porque el niño
Esté de buenas.
Y si el niño llora
Menguará la luna
Para hacerle una cuna.
Y si el niño llora
Menguará la luna
Para hacerle una cuna.

"Beautiful Maria of my Soul" comes to mind,
but the music-ah!
and the beautiful singer- ah!
also complement the lyrics.

Spanish version with Antonio (oh baby, oh, baby) Banderas.
