Movie: Flashdance

Currently watching this with one eye (it's on television). This is one of the first dance movies I recall seeing, aside from the Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly etc movies.

On one hand it looks a bit "dated" in terms of the hair and makeup, and whilst it is early minutes of the movie, the love story element really is, umm (the boss/love interest is still cute  ) BUT as a story of someone following their dream, yeah (!) I can buy into it

I love that movie! Have it at home somewhere taped off the TV. I love the storyline and the dance sequences of her in the club are fabulous! The classic water trick is my favourite.

Must watch it again.

What a feeling!

Yup. As a teenage boy when that came out...yup!

Oh right! Pursuing a dream.

I haven't actually watched the whole movie -- only clips of it

When I think of Flashdance, the first thing that comes to my mind is the scene in The Full Monty (which I saw at a local cinema) where the guys watch the film to learn what dancing is about and start criticising the girl's welding skills. One of the (many) priceless moments in that film...

Now we are really talking about flashing, Sabor!

If those movies come on (Flash Dance, Dirty Dancing, etc) I mute the sound until the dancing comes on. After the first couple of viewings, the stories - especially DD - are pretty hokey but love to watch them dance.

And, MacMoto, did you see the movie version of The Full Monty or the live performance? It is coming to my city (Broadway tour) and I can't decide if it would be worth the price.

The original movie. I haven't seen the stage musical version, but people who have seen both seem to think the stage version is also good. I hear the stage version is set in New York somewhere rather than Sheffield, England, and I'm wondering how this has worked given the very British nature of the original film.

I saw the movie. And talking about coincidences, I was just mentioning it to my son this morning. I asked him if I'd shown him that movie (I couldn't remember), and he said, yes, and the line that sticks out in HIS mind is when the social workers/police are asking the little boy if his dad ever takes his clothes off in front of him. "Only when he's rehearsing."

I really liked that movie. The things that really got to me were how important it was to these macho "he-men" what their wives thought of them. The one executive couldn't bring himself to tell his wife he'd been laid off because he couldn't bear the thought that she might think less of him. And the other one, who was self-conscious because he was a little overweight, was going to drop out of the show until his wife reassured him that she genuinely thought he was sexy and attractive. And as long as she thought so, it didn't matter what anybody else thought, and it made him FEEL sexy and attractive, and he went out there proudly and did it.

It's scary to realize that my opinion can matter so much to a man. Kind of like a sacred trust, in a way. It makes me want to be very very careful that I never abuse that. Men ARE wonderful.
