Movie: Meet Joe Black

I thought we had discussed this movie previously but I searched and could not find any previous threads.

It played on television tonight and I was getting more and more "insight" into the storyline, than I had on the previous nine hundred and ninty nine times I saw it.

Never thought much of Brad Pitt before I first saw the movie but I think I "fell in love with him" during the movie. I thought he was good, including when he did the Jamaican accent! I adore Anthony Hopkins anyway (never watched Silence of the Lambs I or II) so that one was easy!

Did I cry? Yeap, just like the other nine hundred and eh.. other times

The daughter Susan, who falls in love in Brad Pitt, well, I found her a bit annoying. Even when it was supposed to be a happy moment, she looked as if she was going to cry!  And yes, I am jealous she was the one kissing Brad Pitt and not me!

Moving along swiftly, I was reminded at the end of the movie that it was based on/inspired by a book called "Death takes a holiday". I think it is going to be on my list of books to read... soon.

I think I've seen it nine-hundred-ninety-nine times too . . . no I didn't fall in love with brad Pitt. My wife did . . . it's her alltime, most-favorite movie!!!

hmmm...I wonder if I have seen this one. :? If someone could tell me a bit about this movie I shopuld be able to figure this out...

 Vince

Hi Sagitta. Do forgive my manners. I guess I have been remiss in introducing you to my friend :google: :raisebro:

From the website www.meetjoeblack.com (found through Google   )

Bill Parrish (ANTHONY HOPKINS) has it all - success, wealth, and power. Days before his 65th birthday he receives a visit from a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (BRAD PITT), who soon reveals himself as Death. In exchange for extra time, Bill agrees to serve as Joe's earthly guide. But will he regret his choice when Joe unexpectedly falls in love with Bill's beautiful daughter Susan (CLAIRE FORLANI).

Meet Joe Black tells the story of media tycoon William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins), whose charmed life and orderly household are suddenly disrupted by the arrival of an enigmatic young man named Joe Black (Brad Pitt) who proceeds to fall in love with Parrish’s beautiful daughter Susan (Claire Forlani). For Parrish, Susan and the rest of his family, the consequences of this romance are profound, complicated and bittersweet, for Joe Black is actually the personification of Death.

What the above extract does not say (and it repeats itself!) is... Death "borrows" the body of a young man who the daughter Susan met in a coffee bar. For her, it was love at first sight/love at first coffee spill. Brad Pitt, aka the body (and what a body! although I did notice that his armpits were a bit hairy and could do with a shave/trim  ) turning up at her father's house did confuse her though. It wasn't until the very end of the movie that she realised that the person in the body wasn't who she thought it was. How she rationalised it/explained it to herself, the movie does not delve into. However, Death returns the soul of the young man and it seems that in some respects the young man's consciousness was there during those days when Death was around, but not quite there, if that makes sense. The young man says an exact phrase that was made between the daughter Susan and Death hence my thinking this. The father does die which is hinted at, we don't actually see this.

What the extract also does not explain is that Anthony Hopkins character suffers chest pains, hears a voice saying "Yes" which, IMO, signals he is dying/about to die. Then, and only THEN does Brad Pitt aka Death aka Joe Black turn up, not before hand, as the extract suggests.

Aha!! Senn teh movie. THough it was a good one I only saw it once. I rarely see a movie twice, you know...

That's a chick-flick, Vince! Surprised you've seen it so often!

You're right, Pacion, it is a good movie, though. I've seen it probably 4 times. BP's pretty sexy in that movie. He's cute when he eats peanut butter, too. Anthony Hopkins makes a splendid performance, as usual.

Are you sure we are talking about the same person?

(Yes, Claire Forlani played the part of Susan  )
