Moving to the Southeast -- Looking for a Dance Scene

The title says it all. I'm moving next summer -- in roughly six months, and I don't want to end up in a podunk town with no dancing. My preferred state is Florida (that's where my DS's college tuition is fully prepaid and I want high to qualify for in-state tuition,) but I am flexible. Georgia/Carolinas/etc are not out of the question.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Ballroom, mostly, and maybe even *gasp* competitive ballroom. I really struggled about where to post this question, because, truth is, I'm happy if I'm dancing. Really doesn't matter what kind. I pretty much do them all equally badly.

well, the good news is that florida and at least atlanta, are full of good instructors so you have many options once you land

Well if you go to the Carolinas . Its pretty much all Carolina shag! Really! Ive seen it danced to rumba and chacha besides its "beach music" , that how popular(?) it is. SC state dance and a HS graduation req! Shag is THE dance from southern Va to Northern FLA . Guess you'll be alright in bigger cities. I know Savannah and Charleston have other dance scenes.

Atlanta has it all.. or, if you choose Fla.. Tampa.. top quality B/room and latin.. both have world class coaches

If NC, you'll have more ballroom options in the more metropolitan Piedmont -- I know of at least a few good people in the Research Triangle area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) and the Triad (Greensboro, High Pt, Winston-Salem), plus Charlotte. The east and west regions of the state are likely to have less, although we do have one DF member who teaches in Asheville, if I remember correctly, though I'm blanking on her name.

Florida has a lot of good instructors in a lot of good places, both chain and independent studios. I'd also second (or maybe it's third or fourth by now) Atlanta - many, many good studios with top level instructors in most styles. Nashville is another good location for top-quality instructors. Once you get outside the major cities, though, you're definitely in "podunk town with no dancing" land. Which is why I drive. A lot.

I feel your pain. North Alabama actually has a better dance scene than the casual observer might assume, but I've still grown FAR too familiar with the stretch of I-65 between Huntsville and Nashville.

Another vote for Tad and Elizabeth. :)

I'm also rather partial to the staff at the FA Boynton Beach, FL, where my old pros now teach

A buddy of mine likes his studio in Augusta, Ballroom in Motion, he is definitely a social dancer.. Charleston seems like a really really nice area.

I haven't been to their studio (they just moved into a brand new location, too), but the Ballroom in Motion staff is amazing! Super friendly and student-focused. And Augusta is a beautiful city! I've heard good things about Savannah as well...both as a city and as a good dance location.

As for the southeast freeways...yeah, I know that stretch of I-65 north of Huntsville very well...and I-20 between Birmingham and Atlanta (the most boring stretch of freeway EVER...okay, except for parts of Utah) and I-59 to Chattanooga...good thing I like driving!

Thanks, Larinda. :-D

And yeah, GG. I was thinking about moving somewhere near Tampa and hitting the highway as needed. One can live anywhere along "the I-4 corridor," which dissects Florida North/ South, and get to Tampa pretty quickly, if they time it right.
