My first Ballroom Dancing show is over!!! And you did a great job SuzieQ:)

Hi everyone! Ok it's like 1 in the morning here, but I can't sleep! SuzieQ and I just got done with our recital and I am actually impressed myself that I made it onto the stage to begin with as last night my nerves were so shot that I had to take medicine in order to sleep lol. The funny thing was like I said in my other thread that I had my best practice during dress rehearsal today and my instructor gave me like five high fives lol. I don't think that he had a clue that I was recovering side affects from my sleeping medicine that I took last night so of course I would be more relaxed today lol! :raisebro:

Anyways, I found out some interesting things about Ballroom Dancing tonight that I never thought of about myself and about the dancing in general.

1. No matter how badly you mess up or even just a bit if you smile the audience will take note. I had goofed up in my second dance (I missed his hands in the Swing a couple times) you couldn't really tell like what Sue said though like what I had thought, because my instructor recovered us very well, but yet I received so many compliments about me smiling through the whole dance that the audience never stated anything about my mess ups lol.

2. Watching a video of yourself helps big time. They used my video camera to tape the show, so I got to watch it at home tonight before they sell it, and I was actually amazed at what I did! But I also learned a few things that I really need to work on, and these are things that I thought I was doing ok on. I thought that was interesting. I also learned that your instructor (no matter how annoying they get lol) are the ones that know how to dance, and that you should listen to them and really drill and ask them questions if you don't understand something. However, I also learned that even though I might have had my arm out to far etc., that I could see what my instructor was talking about in the video, so now everything makes sense (even though I'm hesitant to tell him this lol)!!!

3. Wear pretty and sexy dresses or outfits! I had on one pretty sexy outfit and one that was meant for the Swing (not so sexy lol), and my best dance was the one with the sexy outfit. I don't know what happened to me, but I became a different person on stage tonight, and I told everyone that it was the dress lol! I never knew that dressing this way would turn me into a woman like what SuzieQ's daughter Gretchen said to me tonight. (She meant like makeup and dressing and become lady like lol and things like this.) That is so true!!!;)

4. Most importantly in times of show, JUST HAVE FUN! My Swing instructor wanted me to go faster than what I was ready to, so I slowed him down from the first step. I was like you can go that fast if you want to, I'll show off and do my own thing lol! I decided that I'm not going to do the stuff on stage I'm not comfortable with like what he wanted me to do. I have to really practice first. So, at the beginning, I took the lead lol. It was funny, because a friend of mine that's a student there asked me if I led the Swing, and I was like nope lol. She also asked me if I was an instructor and said that I should be. I'm like I've only been dancing three months lol.

But anyways, I'm sure that I'll think of more lessons that I have learned tonight, but I'm just so proud of myself right now, which is why I can't sleep lol! My Cha Cha instructor and I already have our next song picked out and it's going to be Roxy from the move Chicago! He said that he wants me to do a spectacular and that I'll be dancing with four or five guys (depending on who's still around etc. lol). He wants me to do a lot of lifts and falls and things like that. I have long legs and I can kick really high when needed, but tonight I just couldn't get my second kick in for the life of me. Then at the end when I did my Swing, my instructor didn't lead me into the kick right lol, and it came out more like a karate chop or something like that lol. Oh well. I was out of breath by then, so I was glad it was over lol!

Anyways, sorry this is so long, but I had learned a lot tonight about a lot of things lol! And SuzieQ did an awesome Tango that you couldn't believe, and her dress was beautiful! She also did a routine with her husband that was oh so sweet. (Ok I had to embarrass her since I'm sure she's probably in bed right now so she won't read this until morning hehe!! :D )

Oh that's great! Wonderful! I'm so happy for you!! :friend: :D The fact that you're not discouraged by your video ;) and all the compliments you got is a great thing. I really hope you get more good experience like this one in the future!

Thanks everyone! :p

I've had the kind of life where I was always criticized because in a way that was how we were raised. My parents would praise us of course, but they would also see to it that we didn't let our heads get the best of us and point to us what we need to work on. But they always said to take it as a way of making you stronger than as negativity. So, to me I don't mind watching myself and criticizing myself for the things I did wrong, because I know that's only going to make me a better dancer in the end. That's why I don't get why people end up crying on these Top Model shows that type of thing, because you shouldn't let that stuff discourage you! Just suck it up, get over it, and move on and become a better person (or dancer lol) instead because of it!

Wow, congratulations! You did more than dance well, you learned about you. I have some music students competing at a festival next weekend, and I'm going to tell them about you and your great attitude!

I was also raised with the criticism/praise cycle (in music), and Mom always told me that when I perform I'm no longer playing on notes, expressions, etc.--I'm performing music. I'm really happy for you that you can convert all your hard work on steps, etc., into dance. Sometimes that's easier said than done.

Nice job!

Thank you so much for all of your compliments! I also take everything as a learning experience, so I can get the most from the situation. I feel as though everything happens for a reason, so you go with what God gives you at the time, which may or may not be the best that you can give lol but that shouldn't stop you from doing what you love to do.

Oh and I was also a music student growing up. That's how I got into my first college! So, in some ways I'm used to being on stage. However, I wasn't ever alone until I performed solos in front of judges (and usually no one else was in the room with you at that time). But Ballroom Dancing is so much different than playing music and Ballet and Jazz (like what I used to do too). I can't explain it really. So, yes I am very proud of myself, and thank you once again for your compliments! I'm glad that I'm a positive role model for someone!!! ;)

Congrats! You've got the first one under your belt and it sounds like it was a great experience. You have the right attitude when it comes to analyzing your own performances (and yes, isn't it amazing how what our pros tell us we're doing wrong we don't seem to believe until we see it with our own eyes?). I'm very happy for you!

Awe thank you! You know that I was sad to see the show end once I got into the swing of things, but it's like what my mom said over the phone today that now I can prepare for the next one and that it will be a lot easier and it will flow a lot smoother now that I know how things work. I will also know how much time I need to prepare for costumes and makeup and hair and who I can count on for things like that etc. So, I'm happy!!! :D

Thanks, Susan! You did a great job, too! It's amazing what a costume can do for you...so fun getting into a character/style and learning to do things you never thought you could! And the next time you'll be a veteran and able to give advice to the "newbies!"

I was sad to have it end, too. Next time maybe three solos!

Lol! I'm thinking maybe three solos next time too, but that depends on if we are really going to do what he has planned for me next time. Because the song Roxy may take up all of the time. Who knows? But I can't wait either way!!! ;)
