Well, I participated in my first competition - and survived! It was a World Promotions event & local for me (so no travel costs). I entered five heats, all newcomer category. What a great time it was! I have only been dancing for 3 months but I am so glad to have participated in it. I had all of my heats taped too and that was a great idea. I was able to look at it with my instructor and focus on things I need to work on. I feel I have taken a GIANT step forward in my dancing.
You all were right, World Promotions puts on a superb event (ok, I have nothing to compare it to because I've never attended a competition anywhere). It was so much fun. And the pro show - WOW. It was Emmanuel and Joanna (mambo champions). I have been in awe watching my first season of DWTS, but to see professional dancers do this when you're sitting 25 feet away...left me speechless.
Through the eyes of this exreme beginner, my thoughts to other newcomers:
- it was well worth participating, even only after just 3 months of dancing
- always wear something sparkly, even in the newcomer category (doesn't mean competition wear, but at least a top with sequins on it or something like that)
- I didn't wear any hose at all and didn't feel wierd (as a newcomer)
- do a trial "hairdo" day; don't leave it until the morning that you're supposed to get ready
- have your heats videotaped
Thank you all for putting up with my questions thus far. It helped me alot. Will I attend another? You bet!
My scoresheet in the newcomer category: W/F/CC/R/S, 3,1,1,1,2 My instructor was very happy with me
However, I feel now my real work begins.
