NDCA registration required for amateurs?

My wife and I compete in USA Dance (registered USA Dance competitors.) If we're going to compete in an NDCA event, do we need to register as NDCA amateur competitors? I'm confused because the NDCA event entry form only asks for the professional's NDCA # and says amateurs don't need to supply their #.

To dance in an NDCA amateur event, you do need to register with NDCA. I don't know if you need to for a Pro-Am event or not.

From the NDCA site:

Amateurs

Amateur Student Competitor ($20.00) - if registering only as "College, Youth, Jr or Pre-Teen Amateur Competitor"
Amateur Adult Competitor ($35.00) - if registering only as an "Adult Amateur Competitor"*
Pro/Am Student Dancer - Optional - (additional $25.00)

President of IDSF states that Athletes registered with member countries, as in USA Dance, can't participate in non IDSF registered and controlled events, as in NDCA, under the threat of suspension. Go to the presidents report at IDSF web site.

I see that some NDCA events are recognized by the IDSF (i.e., the Desert Classic DanceSport Championships). Does anyone know if David Hamilton's comp (Nashvillestarz) is an IDSF recognized event? I can't find any indication that it is on their web site.

I asked Judi Hatton. Here is her reply as to whether USA Dance members can enter NDCA events .....

***********

"YES YOU CAN!!!

All NDCA events are recognized by USA-Dance. There are only two IDSF events in this country and they are IDSF Grand Slam events for the top 12 in the world in International - not exactly your category.

Put your entries in - this is not a problem for you.

At this time, there is only one event in the USA that you may not enter, and that is in Orlando in September."

So we will get our NDCA registration so as to be able to dance more events. :-)

USA dance can't recognize NDCA events, and the NDCA can't sanction USA Dance Events. They may allow their members to attend, but the IDSF release says otherwise. Sorry but Judi probably didn't read the IDSF Presidents October release. Maybe she should, and so should everyone.

Since USDSC is the event you are referring to in Orlando, and it's a recognized NDCA event, why can't USA Dance members go to it? Can't have it both ways. It may be that USA Dance and the NDCA are bending and breaking their own rules.

After a meeting with IDSF and NDCA officials in NY it was agreed that only competitions in the US that run official WDC Championships would be restricted events for IDSF/USA Dance Members. The USDSC is the only event that runs WDC Championships therefore it is the only restricted event in our country for USA Dance members.

Does this apply to pro-am students? I know someone who casually joined USA Dance for social dancing purposes. She only competes in pro-am and I don't think it is relevant at this time for her as she's not planning to compete in USDC any time soon. Still, I'm curious about where pro-am students stand in this regard.

But some students might compete both... e.g. the student does pro-am with his/her teacher, and am-am with another student... So it could affect pro-am students, if that makes sense?

In which case it WOULD affect them, as they dance am-am.

So, it's not the USA dance membership per se... If a USA Dance member does not compete am-am in any USA Dance comps, it's Ok to compete in USDC....

getting confused again. not that any of this affects me.
