Re: Stones

One thing that I found really helps is spend a few bucks on some good tweezers. The ones I have I got at the fabric store the are bigger than cosmetic tweezers and have a tip that is at a right angle (or nearly) to the handle. They cost about four dollars.
Maybe you've gotten really good with your tweezers, but you should try the applicator/candle route and see how fast you can get.

candle?

I haven't heard of this technique can you describe it. I am always ready to hear about short-cuts. I am actualy pretty fast because I "draw" my design on the gown in tailers chalk. So I can dot and glue at a pretty good clip.

One thing I would like to ask any of the gals (or guys) who make gowns - where do you get stoning ideas/patterns. Dancing is my only artistic ability - so I spend hours agonzing over what to do with the stones. My last dress was a pattern of interlocking arc's. I used three different caps from various beauty products and one of the tuna fish cans I use as a patterns weight. I it looked pretty good and I got quite a few compliments but I could really use some ideas.

Gumby, the technique that Laura taught me is to put some beeswax on the end of a toothpick and use that to pick up the stones...works really well, and easier I'm sure than using tweezers!

For the blue dress that I stoned, I used a french curve to make the patterns.

I know this sounds crazy but I come up with my best stoning patterns in my sleep. Right before I wake up I'll dream up something. I've also come up with hairstyles that way.

I come up wiht dress designs at the point when your in bed just become you completely fall asleep I'll see out of the corner of my eye.

I have a question. For an upcoming showcase, my partner and I were given a dress for her to wear. The dress is black and White with a simple, but pretty stoned pattern. However, there are weird brown spots on some parts of the dress. Is it safe to use a bleach spray to wipe the stains off? Are there any good cleaning methods for stoned dresses?

I would not use a bleach pen...the rest largely depends on who made and stoned the dress...wash by hand in tide and lay flat to dry is the safest bet

I'm just a little worried about washing it in my DORM bathtub. Its kind of gross...

Obviously if that's your only option, you have to clean the bathtub first. (Gag ...) Use the "touch" test. It may look clean, but still have nasties that make the gown worse. Feel the entire surface of the tub for grit. If you feel anything at all, scrub until it's gone unless you can conclusively confirm that the roughness is the surface itself. Be careful!

Good luck.

lol...is it possible to clean the dorm tub :)?

if not, and believe me I truly grasp this, can you use a sink in the kitchenette?

you can also put the gown in a pillowcase and swish it around in there as added protection...will also help you save any stones that come off
