need Rhinestone advice

Hi ,
This is my first attempt to add rhinestones to my standard gown. I was trying to get some advice online and came across this site.
My dress is a light pink, and I would like to apply some dark stones to it.

Is jet black stones a good idea ? Do they sparkle ?
Should I try cosmojet or hematite or jet AB instead ?

Appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you very much indeed.

Welcome to DF, skyflyer! You've definitely come to the right place...hang around for a little while and I'm sure our resident costuming experts will be able to give you some wonderful advice. :D

There are some real experts on this forum who can provide more details, but I have a light pink dress with clear, fuschia and rose AB Swarovski rhinestones. I love it.

Have you ordered a rhinestone card so you can actually see the colors? They usually do not cost more than $20 and are well worth the price to see the stone color with your fabric. Also, I find looking at stone and fabric in natural daylight very helpful. Good Luck!

I strongly advise not to put dark stones on a light fabric. From a distance, they will look like specks of dirt. Rhinestones are supposed to add sparkle to the dress. If your dress is light pink, go for clear ab (CAB, for short), with some light rose and light rose AB. You could try rose and rose AB, but I suspect even these will probably look too dark.
If you want to use darker colors, you need to mass them together in a pattern. This means lots and lots of stones (the cost adds up very quickly), some careful planning for laying out the stones, and a lot of time to get it done right. It's good to have a design in mind before you start. If you go adventurous with darker colors in such a design, the result could be a disaster and you will have ruined the dress and wasted the money.

No to black. I think Jools is referring to crystal AB. There are also stones that are called "transmission" which basically have no reflective backing; they just look whatever color the dress is and whatever sparkle the facets provide.

I have a dress with transmission on, they add a very subtle sparkle, and are very pretty. AB is far more in your face.
I agree a darker stone does not look right with a random scatter but can look good in a strong pattern.

AB = Aurora Borealis coating. Gives a multicolored look to stones, sometimes more vibrant. I don't have much experience with them - I prefer strait colors and pure crystal over crystal AB.

And a friendly public service announcement...

Check out my signature for a nice place to order stones..... <hint hint> ;)

I'm just a girl tryin' to make livin'....:raisebro:

For the first time, I got effect stones (meridian blue) and looove the look

I love the effect stones, too.

On the last dress I stoned, I used fire opals on a red fabric, and LOVED loved loved the look.

Yea for effect stones. They're expensive, though - I usually mix them in with some plain ones (ie, mixing siam and fireopal stones on the same dress - then they're like highlights. :))
