Need to learn to dance

Hi,

I am a 22 year old college student and I want to learn to dance. More specifically club dancing. I go to clubs in San Francisco every once in a while with my friends (sometimes with girls, sometimes without), and they are all decent dancers, but I don't really know how to dance, so I usually just hang out at the bar. Even if I see a girl that i really want to dance with I am usually too embarresed and conscious of my lack of dancing skills to go talk to her knowing that we will eventually end up on the dance floor.

Is there anywhere I can go to learn how to dance in California, more specifically in the Bay Area?

Any videos or website that may provide any help?

THanks a lot.

Hi calkilla2001 and welcome to DF. You wrote you are a college student. You are not at university by any chance are you?

Hi catkilla,

UC Berkeley has the biggest ballroom dancing program in the entire UC system. It should be very easy to learn some moves over there. Try asking around.

I have competed against UCB people many times, and they are decent dancers.

Hope you do well!

Great! Doesn't Berkeley have dance classes/dance societies?

I know that berkeley has many dance groups, like salsa, ballroom dancing, swing dancing....etc. I ve never heard of a class that teaches modern or club dancing, does such a class exist? SHould i just ask one of the ballroom or salsa teachers if they could teach me how to club dance(is there a specific type of dance people do at clubs?)? Would they think that it was wierd if I asked them this?

IS there anybody on this site living in the bay area that could teach me? I am willing to drive and meet you, I can also pay for the lessons if you would like? Thanks.

Am in NY, so I am out. I don't think I do club dancing too well though.

You could take hip-hop lessons. Don't know anything about this woman, but she sure teaches a lot, including a class at the Beat in Berkeley.

Maybe the b-boying class at the Beat too.

If you're willing to go to the city, I've talked to people who've taken classes from this guy. They say he's great although it doesn't sound like you'd get a gentle introduction if that's what you're looking for. I don't really know. Maybe you could find out and report back to us.

The Metronome in the city also has hip hop classes.

Actually wouldn't West Coast Swing lessons work too? That way you could actually lead some moves which could potentially impress the heck out of your average freestyle booty-shaker.

Freestyle booty-shaking 101. When and where do they offer this?
