observations about beginning open smooth

on a light-hearted note, here are my first three

1) I have more bruises
2) practicing alone has some new challenges
3) my quads get much tighter

well this is why I started the thread...I figure lots of folks transitioning from syllabus to open, maybe even in other styles, have had similar experiences

anyhow, re #1...I think that that has alot to do with alot going on in a short period of time in ways that I am not yet accustomed to and which involve some rather sudden coming together and going apart from and dropping and spinning and the like that invloves a degree of force and contact in part due to the level and in part due to my still being crappy at it :)

re #2) am doing what I can...and I can do alot of it and know what to focus on, but it is hard to figure out how to put my head on a shoulder that isn't there or drop onto a knee in a deep back bend etc...I know I am responsible for my own balance but he is a force to be reckoned with so it is hard to recall those aspects and work them as I'd like alone

WRT #3)...I don't know what this is about but my quads have been screaming all week and the workout ladies are not feeling it so it has to be the lessons and that is the only thing that's new

Do you have a foam roller? My foam roller can soothe the aching quads like nothing else (other than Rolfing, but I'm not gonna ride that hobby horse here). I wuv my foam roller.

About practicing alone, I wish I could help, but like you, all the stuff that requires the other body to be present I simply fake as best I can. Alas, that includes a LOT of stuff.

don't get me wrong...most of my dance life is practicing alone...I know how to do it...and why and what ...to a large extent...but...well...this stuff? not so much...inside spin? yes, hairpin? yes....kick up past your head, spin around twice in place, hug the dude and then do a backebend over his knee...um...not so much

as to foam roller...I would have killed anyone, including myself who would have dared to touch my quads for the last three days...am mystified...but I will look into it anyhow

Come to think of it, my smooth partners got a lot more unexplained bruises in weird places on their legs than my standard partners.

Are you taking a lot of anti-imflammatories like ibuprofen, aspirin, or alieve which would make you bruise more?

I don't have a solution either, but I just started the transition to open standard and I am constantly bruised. My feet and shins look like I got attacked by a toddler.

LOL, on the foam rollers... My dance instructor hands them out like candy!!
He buys them in long rolls cuts them up and you see him coming out of the instuctors room and giving them to all the smooth ladies, and in our case husband, walking out with one of these under thier arms!!

So funny had no idea anyone else used these!!

yea...i heard that from john swick long ago and have taken it to heart...and the bruises aren't really painful...just surprising...I lifted my arms up to hug dh and he was like"what the...?"...and there were several digit sized little bruses here and there...and then I found some bigger ones on the lower extremities...as for the quads...after 4 days, those finally feel okay...that one still puzzles me
