Off Night...

I know it happens, but I had a really off night. I think it was because I was dancing with leads that danced on 2 (I dance on 1) and/or NY style (I dance Casino) and I was SO lost. One of my favorite dancers tried teaching me Suzie Q which was just a mess (but still fun). On top of that, they played a lot of bachata and even more regeton which really limited how much dancing I got in. I feel like I've started Salsa all over again. So...how do you guys make the best of a night when you're not at your best?

It happens. There will nights where the music is subpar, the floor sticky or too crowded, the air conditioning is broken, or dancers that you're just not connecting well with. Sometimes all it takes is one really good dance. But honestly? If it's an off night, and doesn't seem to be getting better, I usually just cut my losses and go home after a few hours. There's always tomorrow night.

I'll just dance a bachata or two with the girls that allow me to leave no distance between us.

It's the only way to dance it, my friend. ;)

(Note: I was at a party the other night and I hadn't danced a proper bachata in ages, so I grabbed a friend who's also a teacher - and so can't dance with me often because he has to dance with his students - and we danced a nice, huggy one. Afterwards I told him with desperate emphasis "Thank you! You know how long it's been since the last proper bachata I've danced???" He laughed a lot, because he knows as well how hard it is to find a proper bachata dancer.)

Two weeks ago at one of the parties a gilr told me that our bachata was the best dance she had for the whole night. I could've listened to her all night but I had to go :)
Our instructors showed us how to dance bachata only once(they showed us the basic and two spins - one of which I still can't do). I learned the rest from watching other dancers. The other things I do when dancing bachata are some simple salsa routines :)

BB there are some urls on df to bachata clips posted on the web that you could learn from...

Noooooo, there are no spins in bachata! Or salsa routines!  Bachata (and I say this yet again) is very much like the blues. Do you spin the lady around when you are dancing the blues? Nope.

Proper Bachata??? what is that? Nothing about a bachata is "proper". You know better than that ;)

I'm talking about really simple things - like a single spin for the whole 4 beats. And I meant to say simple elements from salsa routines... Most if the dance we're just doing the basic step.

//We went really offtopic on this one...

Usually, a nice bachata with a warm partner can save any night, but last night was beyond redemption. I wasn't feeling the music. Usually when this happens, I will dance through it, and eventually start feeling the music, but last night, it was not to be. There's always another night :).

Plus an "off night" makes the good nights stand out even more.
