Ohio Star Ball Friday pro/am - conflicts

I got what he meant :) besides, one his other students does smooth, so it's good info. Am still trying to figure out the single dance heats for open.
 
Ah, for some reason, I got the impression she was asking about smooth... my mistake. Open (Advanced) Rhythm single dances are Wednesday evening, as well as the multi-dance rising star and dancesport series.
 
@Mengu I was interested in both rhythm and smooth - rhythm for me, smooth for the other student. THANK YOU for this clarification. Finally i understand the schedule. YOU GUYS ROCK
 
The tentative schedule is strongly influencing what I will dance if I choose to go...

Team match is Thursday evening.
Latin singles and scholarship are Friday morning.
Standard singles are Saturday morning. Open scholarship is on Sunday.
10-dance, both latin and standard, is on Sunday as well.

The rules say: "World Pro/Am Dancesport Series Bronze and Silver, Open or Senior Scholarships – You can only enter in one level and one age in each style. Also you must dance a minimum of 5(4 for smooth) single dances in the same style to qualify for these events. "

So, likely ... no to team match, no to latin, ugh for the standard schedule that splits my required singles and scholarships onto 2 days and adds an extra hotel night, and maybe to 10-dance... that last 'maybe' dependent entirely on whether 5 singles are required on Friday morning in order to do 10-dance on Sunday, in which case, we're probably a no. Plus, total boo on making the 10-dance not a combined latin/standard result and making me dance the standard twice (once for standard, once for 10-dance), because that ups my pro costs considerably.

And if we're down to only 5 singles and standard scholarship.... well, maybe a no to making the trek at all. More thinking will be happening. And maybe more whining ;)
 
Team match is invitation only- you have to earn your spot in the team match based on your dancesport series points. The teams are made up of the regions and are full of the people who have essentially done the most comps.

This one I'm not sure about but I think everyone who does 10 dance also seems to do both Latin only and Standard only as well, so I'm not sure what they'd say. You'll have to ask them. They can't do it based on combined results, and have to run them as separate events because of a variety of reasons, one of which is that some students may dance Latin with one instructor and Standard with another (don't ask me why), but for 10 dance, they would have to pick one or the other. And if they did base them on combined results, you would have to dance on Friday anyway, so it wouldn't be saving you that extra day.
 
But it (combined result) would save me the registration and pro fees for the extra dances...

Really, I'm not interested in dancing latin scholarship if it isn't part of 10-dance, because I'm just not competitive with the latin specialists. Current goal for that style is 'not completely embarrassing on an open floor' or 'huh, her latin's pretty good for a standard dancer'. Maybe we'll work up to it someday, but it's not what I'm working toward right now.

(I haven't competed in latin for a few years, and even that was only open bronze in 3 dances. Stepping up to all 5 at a scholarship level is a big jump, and whether 10-dance is feasible at Ohio will be determined after I try all 10 at a comp this summer.)
 
I've always seen separate events for the 9/10 dance championships and the single style championships. I can't imagine how it would work without separate events. I can see how it could work if there weren't multiple rounds, but a lot of relative placement information could be lost by competitors being knocked out of early rounds by the people who are competing in only one style and who are strong in it.

Same way it works for professionals... You get points based on placement and number of callbacks. So it could be done, except for the issue in pro-am environment because of partnering. Also most amateurs want to dance more, not less. Also organizers like money.

You're 100% right, but it does happen. My old am instructor did 10-dance and I used to get outraged on his behalf all the time. "But four of the five 10 dance couples had fewer than four marks per dance in the standard semis. The differences don't actually *mean* anything, that's basically noise!" But ... it was what it was.
 
Our nationals is a combined result this year, for pro-am at least. They simply stipulate that to be eligible for the 10 (or 9) dance titles, you need to dance both scholarship segments with the same partner.

And if our dollar doesn't go up, the Ohio schedule issues won't matter as I won't be able to afford to go!
