so...I was stupid and did the ending of our routine (which is a full split) when I was not fully warmed up...and now my outer hip/hamstring really hurts... eek! what do I do? I have a show on Saturday!!

Ouch... sorry to hear! I know, from experience, that any pull hurts. Try ice for the first day and then use heat.

You will need to rest your hips and hamstrings, for sure. Stay away from the splits! Next time, remember to warm-up and stretch fully before attempting any splits.

Good luck and heal really soon...

jenibelle, I strained a hamstring a couple days before a showcase a while back. As Jiver mentioned, do ice it to keep the inflamation down the first couple of days. I managed to get through the showcase by warming up throroughly and carefully before the showcase to avoid further injury to the hamstring and went as easy as I could on it (taking out anything that might further the injury).

After your show, make sure you rest it. My hamstring injury to a couple of months to heal. And - as it is healing, do VERY, VERY gentle stretches. I made the mistake of not stretching carefully as it was healing and the scar tissue that formed during the healing process made the leg less flexible. I had to do a lot of work to get the flexibility back to where it was before the injury. You should get the advice of a physical therapist on the recovery process.

oh thank you guys so much for the advice!

so, i went to the trainer and she took really good care of it and now i have it wrapped up. unfortunately i'm going to have to wear the wrap underneath my dress (attractive, eh?) but it's better than not performing at all! and then after the show i have to stay away from exercise for a couple of days, then I can start gently stretching it and moving around and hopefully it will heal without scar tissue or take away from my flexibility.

bleeech, i hate setbacks!!

Take it easy. Don't do the stupid thing we dancers do and push yourself till it hurts (and then some). Take care of your body. It's your only real tool.
I hope you recover quickly. Take care. :D

Good luck to you jenibelle! I'm glad you sought professional advice to ensure a full recovery from the injury. Hope your show goes well.

Yeah I agree with you. I did that once. I won't push myself again. ;)

I'm really really REALLY hoping not to lose any flexibility though...it took me years to get where I am and it was getting better and better and now THIS...grrrrrrrrr

Sorry just had to vent

Awe. Well, when stuff like this happens to me, I look at it as a learning experience. When my back gave out, I didn't know what to do nor did I know that I could take medicine for it, because everyone was telling me I couldn't take anything for it. But now I know to get some medicine right away in case that does happen to me again. So, I learned from it and moved on. That's all you can really do in times like these in my opinion anyways. But I understand what it's like to vent in a situation like that. I did a lot of venting when my back gave out. I couldn't believe it happened and right before my showcase was supposed to happen lol. So, I completely understand! ;)

I empathize jenibelle. It's hard work improving your dancing and injury is not that easy a thing to avoid in the process. Don't worry about the loss of flexibility, as long as you are aware of and balance the possibility of losing the flexibility and re-injuring the muscle, you will be fine.

It's good that you got some professional help right after the injury...I pulled a hamstring many many years ago (I was in high school) and was too stupid to go to a doctor. In fact, if my recollection is correct, I really didn't do much of anything but sit and whine about it. I ended up having problems and pain for years afterwards. So you are certainly on the right track and I'm betting there won't be any permanent loss of flexibility...but do be careful! Think long-term.

Is it a hamstring or the psoas? Is it near the front of the hip but on the outer side of it? It sounds like the same thing I did doing a split and it took forever to heal. I guess I'm too old to be doing hip hop classes and should have known better.

Try Advil, ice and slow stretches. Good luck.

it's mostly the hamstring itself, starting from right under the butt and going down towards the back of the knee - i think the psoas is intact (phew!) but there is also tightness in the IT band which I have always found nearly impossible to stretch, although I like rolling around on a foam thing.

and you are never too old to do hip hop!!
