People who have the most influence on your dancing

......ok, in the eve of my very first Congress, I'm feeling retrospective  ..........

In line with all the Hall of Fame/inspiration threads, is there any person/people (internationally known or local/unknown) who have *physically* (ie. learning from video/DVDs don't count  ) made an impact on your dancing....? In what way....?

Here's mine (in no particular order):

My salsa mentor/ex (who enlightened me with the true essence of salsa & all the cultrual/historical aspects relating to it. he made me a true follower)
Fabio Robles (who taught me showmanship & presentation)
The cast of 'Lady Salsa' (for showing me true Cuban spirit & sabor)
John Salsa (of Perth, who restored my confidence & kick-started my 'salsa renaissance')
Gustavo 'el general' (of Seattle, who reignited my passion for salsa when I was lost)
Gupson Pierre (of 'Attitude', Singapore, who show me that flashy moves can be lead :o )
Luis Vasquez of 'Salsa Brava' & Joby (who show me not to be afraid of the unfamilliar, for all styles share the same roots)
CapricornDancer (who suitably challenged me & initiated my recent break-through)
Eric Turro (of 'Buena Vista', for giving me a humbling lesson)
SugarGlider (for bring me back to basic)
Silverkea, my dear boyfriend (for constantly reminding me never forget to have fun :D )

..............I would not be here today if it wasn't for you all. Here's my :notworth: :notworth: :notworth:........!!!!!

Anyone feels like sharing theirs....?

Definitely!

The Latin quarter dance school, Portuguese branch - for having passed on to me the love and passion for dancing!

João Luís Santos (the registered DF user joaoluissantos), current teacher of mine from Latin Quarter who taught me to see salsa in a more cultural and academic perspective, introduced me to on2 style, and is accompanying me in my continuous development as a salsero.

Daniela and Michal Sejkorovo, from S.E.C.S salsa dance company from Prague, who introduced me to salsa in Central Europe.

Bibi Fernandes, Espasso Latino dance company, Lisbon, for showing me how each simple step in salsa is there for a reason.

Nuno Furtado and Vanda Gameiro, professional dancers from Just Dance company, based in Lisbon (they gave a workshop in the Bognor Regis congress in England in september, and performed in New Jersey in November), who constantly make me aware of my shortcomings, have helped to, slowly, but progressively improve my styling skills, and keep remembering how beautiful salsa dancing can look.

Susana Montero and Super Mario - with whom I learned what shines were all about.

Tropicana salsa school, in London, for having learned quite a lot of rueda

And all the folks from salsaportugal.com forum and DF, with whom I learn on a daily basis!

Ana Pintão, from Lisbon, my salsa godmother, who keeps track of my development and keeps telling me I need to be a softer leader!

To all the salseras out there that tell me the things I need to improve in.

all the best,
Tiago

To my df friends to showing me dancing is more about just dancing to the music when I felt that I was missing something. When I was having fun but still wasn't there yet.

To JS for giving me hope that all wasn't lost at the 2004 NYC salsa congress.

To all those who have opened their souls and connected with me on the dance floor. Each time this happens I get inspired and my dancing improves as this is the only time that I'm dancing. :( (Everything else is just moving to the music with a partner.) I often learn new moves or remember all the old ones that I never otherwise do as I just don't feel like doing them!!

Not many people will know these names, but this is a good mental exercise for thinking about my history with Salsa. :D

Liz -- A Colombian friend who introduced me to Salsa by inviting me to a club and teaching me my very first Salsa steps.

Anna -- A Mexican friend who would Salsa with me and kept it fun, even for the years when I couldn't do more than the basic without getting off beat.

Russell & Jennifer -- Two Mexican friends who inspired me with their smooth execution of patterns and a kind of creativity that I hadn't seen in Salsa before them.

Wayne -- A Caribbean friend who could dance Salsa much better than anyone else at house parties, and had ALL the ladies wanting to dance with him. Watching the women drool helped me understand the power of Salsa. 8)

Michelle -- A friend from swing-dancing class with whom I would frequently go out dancing. I think the lead/follow skills from swing helped my Salsa a lot.

Julie -- A friend who invited me to a wine-tasting party where I won some free Salsa lessons....lessons that turned out to invigorate my desire for learning more.

Jose -- A Cuban friend who told me about some Salsa lessons he was planning to take from an instructor I had never heard of. Jose wound up stopping after the first month, but I kept on going.....

Raul -- The "instructor I had never heard of," who turned out to be an excellent teacher! He is from Panama and had a great way of teaching body movement, as well as making Salsa fun.

Classmates in Raul's Class -- People who are still my friends long after we stopped taking classes together. We would go out dancing frequently, and that extra practice really helped me to develop my Salsa.

Sylvia -- A Puerto Rican friend who gave me a couple of Salsa CDs for my birthday a few months after I had started taking classes. Those were the first full Salsa CDs I ever owned (and therefore could listen to at home), and the exposure to the wide variety of Salsa on those CDs helped me to feel the variety of music in the clubs a lot better.

Frankie Martinez and Aisha -- Finally a couple of names you might recognize! AWESOME all-around dancers. Saw them perform in Houston around the time I started taking lessons with Raul. I didn't even remember their names at the time, but I remembered the unique and smooth way they danced. It wasn't until a couple of years later, well after I started learning about different Salsa things on the Internet, that it clicked for me that it was "the" Frankie Martinez I had seen near the start of his performing career.

People in Raul's Dance Company -- Another group of people who are still my friends, and from whom I stole plenty of moves, err, uh, I mean, from whom "I learned a lot of technical things about dancing."

Ari -- The partner in the only Salsa contest I ever won. That was the first time I let myself think I was actually "good." The audience response is something that I'll never forget. I call myself Big10 because we were couple number "10" in that contest.

Too Many Dancers in the Houston Clubs to Name Them All -- Some people whose names I know and some names I will never know, but they either danced with me in a fun way, or they provided inspiration by their skill on the dancefloor.

To all the scarily amazing female teachers in Edinburgh who danced with me (Fiona Blair, Lorna and Carol-Ann Stephenson), without who I wouldn't have had the confidence to dance with the performers at my first UK congress.

Leon Rose & Tamambo

Tropical Gem
- For confirming to me what I thought all along, that LA style and afro-Cuban movement do mix well and giving me new inspiration through their dancing!

Most of us learnt from old-schools are quite aware of this, yet somehow it got lost in the scheme of things along the way.......Thankyou so very much for bringing it back, and into the public :D !

Hi Tânia,
great to see you around! :D

Ooh good thread!

Lets see

LeeAnne- We don't talk anymore, but she got me into salsa

McCrea- My friend, for taking me out, showing me the ropes, and most importantly, introducing me to Cuban salsa.

I can't really say any teacher has particulary influenced my style, I never really done classes. I have a shines video by Susana Montero, but have never really used it.
