Places to stay in New York

Hotel rooms in New York are very expensive. Have any of you regular visitors discovered any cheaper alternatives? I think I'll be doing more regular trips. I'm looking for something clean in a safe neighborhood. I may even start looking at train accessible places outside of Manhattan.
 
You might look at short-term sublets or part-time roomate ads.

Astoria is a nice area... much cheaper than Manhattan and but with relatively good train service (though you can wait a while at 1 am)
 
I'm in swiss cottage 1291 right now, a hostel on 55th between 8th and 9th ave. Really grubby compared to a hotel, but we're paying 75 bucks a night for a private double room. Neighborhood seems fine. Bring earplugs! It's only 3 storeys and not soundproofed. Last night I got 7 lots of 40 minute sleep, punctuated by fire trucks etc...
 
yeah it's loud in that part of town. earplugs definitely an asset. but that's so cheap by new york standards - if you can stand it, just stay put. no reason to spend money on a room when you are never there.

otoh, sleep is, like, kinda important.
